Digital Anarchy’s ToonItAfter Effects plug-in makes cartooning fun!
Many of you who know me from my podcasts or writings know I love great plug-ins for After Effects. The top plug-ins can make you look like a rock star to your clients. One of my potential clients asked me if I could give the look of a cartoon to his footage for a segment of a short film. I told him I would look into it. Luckily, Digital Anarchy was secretly developing the perfect tool, ToonIt.
As I strolled by their booth at NAB I had a chance to take a look at ToonIt. I instantly fell in love with it. This new plug in would allow me to explore some really fun creative stuff and save me time in the process.
What is ToonIt?
Digital Anarchy’s ToonIt is a plug-in for Adobe After Effects. ToonIt allows After Effects users a much simpler method of creating the “cartoon” look to your content. No longer do you need to spend countless hours rotoscoping or hand painting. Simply apply ToonIt to your content in After Effects and off you go.
What are the looks?
ToonIt comes with four filters. Want to give your film the comic book look? Try the “Outlines Only” filter which uses edge detection to produce some rock solid cartoon style edges.
Have a taste for neon? Try the “Blacklight Edges” filter and you will be the hit of Haight Ashbury with fun neon colored edges in your footage. “Roto Toon” will give you all you need to have the entire project look just like a top notch cartoon. And finally, there is the “Goth” filter which enables you to use internal color rotoscoping to create extremely high contrast effects. All are very cool and will test the limits of your creativity.
Mac or PC?
Digital Anarchy has made the ToonIt plug in for both Mac and PC. I tried it out on both a Dell and a MacPro. The Dell is a Pentium 4 with 2GB RAM. I found the plug-ins to really challenge the system’s power and it would take a bit of time to be able to change configurations. When using it on the MacPro 2.66GHz 4-Core with 4GB RAM in both Windows via Boot Camp and Mac OSX, the plug in worked super fast.
I really enjoy using ToonIt and I am happy to include it in my After Effects arsenal. The amount of different looks I can create with the four filters is amazing. The interface is easy to use and customizable. Digital Anarchy has been working hard perfecting it and it shows. You can download a demo and test your creative juices. ToonIt will run you $295 and is available at www.digitalanarchy.com.
