Digital Anarchy Ships 64-Bit Lossless Codec for QuickTime

MicroCosm offers 6:1 lossless compression By Dave Nagel
Digital Anarchy has released its new MicroCosm, a 64-bit lossless codec for QuickTime. Digital Anarchy publishes design and compositing software, including plugins for Adobe and Discreet systems, as well as the Color Theory color scheme generation suite. The latest release, MicroCosm, is available now for Macintosh and Windows.

MicroCosm is targeted toward higher-end compositing and design work. According to Digital Anarchy, the lossless codec achieves compression ratios of 6 to 1 compared with uncompressed footage and 4 to 1 compared with the Animation codec. The company says the codec achieves "absolute image fidelity" while producing files that are sometimes smaller than those encoded in lossy formats.

Aside from its lossless compression, MicroCosm supports both 64- and 32-bit color spaces (16 bits per channel and eight bits per channel).

The codec is available now for $99, which includes a combined Macintosh and Windows license. A demo version is also available for download. The free version is available as a download from the company's Web site or as a component download from within the QuickTime Player application. It supports QuickTime 5 and later.
