Digital Anarchy Announces Knoll Spark Pack 2.0

Includes John Knoll?s Lens Flare Pro, And A Free, Downloadable spark, Knoll Screen. (October 05, 2001)
Digital Anarchy has announced their first spark plug-in package for Discreets Advanced Systems. Previously marketed by Puffin Designs, Knoll Spark Pack 2.0 adds new functionality, as well as increased rendering speed and higher quality rendering. Created by ILM Visual Effects Supervisor John Knoll (Star Wars Episode 1 & 2, Mission Impossible, Star Trek First Contact), Knoll Spark Pack includes four spark plug-ins; Knoll Lens Flare Pro, Knoll UnMult, Knoll Min/Max, and Knoll Screen. Knoll Screen is available for free download from the Digital Anarchy web site.

Knoll Lens Flare Pro enables the creation of complex, photo-realistic lighting effects. The Lens Editor interface allows users to customize their camera lens by layering up multiple Lens Primitives. These nineteen Lens Primitives contain every artifact found in traditional camera lenses. Auto-obscuration can turn a light on or off automatically based on the luminance values of another clip. The Tint feature is used to tint the lights color based on the RGB values of another clip. The Auto-Track feature allows a light source to follow another layers center of luminance. Multi-Track adds the ability to track multiple points, like particle effects, based on luminance.

Knoll UnMult is used to generate mattes for light effects or other bright elements generated on a black background. It is also the perfect solution to cleanly composite elements with pre-multiplied alpha channels. UnMult creates an alpha channel based on the maximum luminance of the RGB channels. It also makes the RGB channels ?un-premultiplied, giving you full access to the RGB values of an element without any alpha-based attenuation. By spreading the RGB pixels outward, and keeping the edge detail in the alpha, UnMult produces perfectly clean composites without fringing.

Typically used to adjust mattes, Knoll Min/Max adjusts each pixel to either the minimum, median, or maximum value found among the pixels that fall within a specified area around it. In traditional photography, these techniques are known as spread and choke.

Knoll Screen is a transfer mode similar to the Screen Logic Ops built into the recent Discreet Advanced Systems. Knoll Screen simulates the practice of double exposing two pieces of positive film. By multiplying the inverse of the source and target clips color channels, light values accumulate but dont clip, and black remains transparent. No alpha channel is used. Screen very elegantly composites light events, such as flares, sparks, reflections, lightning, fire, and explosions. Since Screen is now built into the Logic Ops, Digital Anarchy is releasing Knoll Screen as a free downloadable Spark for users of older Discreet Advanced Systems, or users who need opacity control which is missing in the built-in Logic Ops.

Knoll Spark Pack is compatible with any version or higher of the products listed. Discreet effect 5.0, flint 5.0, flame 5.0, inferno 2.0, smoke 2.0, and fire 2.0.

Knoll Spark Pack 2.0 is available until Oct. 31, 2001at a special intro price of $1295. The regular list price is $1495. Demo versions and sample movies can be downloaded from www.digitalanarchy.com , as well as the fully functional free Knoll Screen spark.

Current users of Knoll Spark Pack 1.0 can upgrade for $249.
