Digidesign Turns 20From drum sample chips and basic software to Pro Tools and ICON (August 03, 2004)
2004 marks Digidesigns 20th anniversary. In 1984, Digidesigns founders Evan Brooks and Peter Gotcher set out to expand the sounds of their drum machine and make enough money through the sales of drum sound replacement chips to finance their own recording dreams. The result was the founding of a company that revolutionized the way that audio was recorded, edited and mixed ? first with Sound Designer, and then with the advent of Pro Tools digital audio workstation technology. Today, Digidesign is the leader in digital audio recording, and Pro Tools has become the audio production standard for music and post professionals around the world. Digidesign provides the music, broadcast, multimedia and film industries with Oscar and Grammy award-winning software and hardware for audio creation, production, and distribution.
?When Evan and I started the company, we were two musicians who wanted music-making tools that didnt exist, so we decided to tackle the challenge of making them ourselves, says Peter Gotcher, Digidesign co-founder. ?Now, Digidesign has over four hundred employees and has completely revolutionized the recording process beyond anything we imagined twenty years ago. They have consistently developed amazing products that incorporate the features that users want and need. Im very proud of the companys success, which I credit to the companys many talented employees and ongoing dedication to its customers. I count my thirteen years as CEO of Digidesign amongst the most rewarding of my career.
Digidesigns products have evolved from drum sample chips and basic software for editing drum sound waveforms to a diverse product line including low-cost, portable Pro Tools LE systems (Mbox, Digi 002 Rack, and Digi 002) on up to the Digidesign ICON, a fully integrated console environment featuring the D-Control tactile worksurface and Pro Tools|HD Accel as its mix engine. Digidesigns product line allows users at every level, price range, and application to have access to award-winning recording solutions as well as the largest third-party development partner network in the industry.
?Peter and I started the company to create products that we needed as musicians, but which were unaffordable or non-existent at that time, says Evan Brooks, Digidesign co-founder. ?I think that mentality still holds true with the employees that work at Digidesign today. Because so many of them are musicians or audio professionals themselves, they create innovative products that answer the needs of the audio community. As a result, Pro Tools continues to advance the state of the art, and has become an industry standard for tens of thousands of users like us.
In keeping with the tradition of innovation, Digidesign is expanding into high-end consoles (ICON) as well as more consumer-oriented products. The company is also preparing to break new ground in the live sound industry with a digital live sound production system that will be debuted at the PLASA show in London this September.
?Digidesign prides itself on having gathered together an entire creative family full of passionate and imaginative post and music people who work directly within our company. As weve grown, their care and attention to detail has allowed us to continually evolve, establishing an innovative product line that has truly helped empower everyone in audio ? from hi-end pros on down to ?bedroom studios, says Dave Lebolt, Digidesigns General Manager. ?Well be excited to see what the next twenty years holds for us, and will continue to attempt to challenge ourselves to stretch the boundaries ? while balancing the needs of thousands of Pro Tools users who are out there using our products every day. Well be working closely with Avid to create new workflow and asset management solutions for the video and film industry, while expanding our core product lines, and will enter entirely new market segments like live sound.
Digidesign plans to celebrate twenty years of success with a number of activities throughout the year. The company will produce special events during AES San Francisco including the biggest DigiWorld ever in their corporate offices in Daly City, California, on Saturday, October 30, 2004. DigiWorld is free and open to the public to enjoy Pro Tools presentations, white paper discussions, third-party developer demos, Intro to Pro Tools workshops, and more.
