Digidesign Shipping Latest Generation DigiDrives

New generation frees ProTools from hard drive limitations By DMN Staff Writer
Digidesign announces the addition of the 36 GB and 73 GB new generation Ultra160/LVD DigiDrives to their storage device product line. Along with ample storage space, the new DigiDrives provide 64 percent higher sustained data transfer rates than their predecessors, as well as processing data at 10K RPM (10,000 Revolutions Per Minute), allowing for higher resolution and faster seek times. Delivering speed, capacity and reliability in force, DigiDrives eliminate the guesswork in choosing a certified, compatible hard drive for Pro Tools systems.

With the new DigiDrives, Digidesigns integrated multi-channel/surround, editing, mixing and processing features are no longer restricted by hard drive limitations. The 73|10k DigiDrive represents the optimal disk drive solution for Pro Tools TDM and AVoption|XL customers, capably handling the most demanding Pro Tools projects. It offers even more room for uncompressed video with AVoption|XL, and stores over 148 minutes of a full 64-track Pro Tools session recorded at 24-bit and 44.1 kHz. With equal dexterity, the 36|10 DigiDrive provides ample storage for multiple surround format mixes, and audio and video files. In both cases, this newest generation of DigiDrives allows you to play 2:1 compressed video off of a single drive (two drives were required for the previous generation), and to play completely uncompressed video from only two drives instead of the previous four.

There are a host of additional features in these latest-generation DigiDrives. Fitted with Digidesign/Avid's exclusive, patent-pending QuietDrive technology, DigiDrive enclosures dramatically reduce drive noise by up to 20dB, making the units quiet enough for use in critical listening environments. Both models support increased SCSI chain length (up to 12 meters) and better data integrity than previous generations. Additionally, up to four units can be clipped and interlocked together in a stack configuration. An optional quick-release rack kit lets users rack- mount two drives side-by-side in a 2U space. Self-contained construction, including built-in power and connections, enables users to take the DigiDrive to studio locations without needing a proprietary dock. Front-mounted controls and indicators provide ideal convenience and visibility. Advanced thermal sensing circuitry enhances cooling efficiency by controlling fan speed, and a built-in heat detection/indicator circuit warns of potential problems before the drive or data are threatened.

For digital audio and video storage needs, DigiDrive provides a high performance and high-capacity storage option with a certified guarantee of compatibility with MacOS- and Windows- based Digidesign systems. Each DigiDrive unit includes the DigiDriveTuner application, which optimizes the drive for use with Pro Tools, further ensuring solid performance. Available from authorized Pro Tools dealers and fully supported by Digidesign Customer Support, DigiDrive offers Pro Tools customers the premier storage solution along with the convenience of one-stop shopping and service.

The DigiDrives are available now. The DigiDrive 36|10k retails for $990 USD, while the DigiDrive 73|10k retails for $1,550 USD.
