Digidesign Intros Pro Tools 6.1

Update provides enhanced Avid support, improved interoperability By Dave Nagel
Digidesign has released information about Pro Tools 6.1, a forthcoming update to the company's digital audio system. The new version brings a unified feature set to Mac OS X and WIndows XP and also adds new options and enhanced support for post-production environments. Digidesign says the software can be ordered now through distributors and will be delivered in four to six weeks.

Pro Tools 6.1 brings WIndows versions of Pro Tools up to speed with their Mac counterparts and also brings additional features that were not in the 6.0 release. These include enhanced Avid interoperability, such as recording and playback of JFIF video resolutions up to 1:1 uncompressed for users of the AVoption|XL. The AVoption|XL also gains the FilmFrame option as standard functionality with AVoption|XL, enabling playback of 24P and 25P JFIF video recorded with Avid workstations without the need for separate authorization. With the DigiTranslator 2.0 option, Pro Tools 6.1 also offers support for Advanced Authoring Format (AAF). Finally, Pro Tools|HD also provides recording, playback and interchange of audio and video files via Avid Unity MediaNetwork shared storage systems. This feature will appear first in the Windows version, though it will also appear in the Mac version by September.

Other new features in Pro Tools 6.1 include:

  • Support for Propellerhead's ReWire technology;
  • Support for both ASIO drivers for Windows XP and Core Audio drivers for Mac OS X systems;
  • Increased levels of undo from 16 to 32.

According to Digidesign, orders for Pro Tools 6.1 are being accepted now through distributors. The Digidesign online store will offer the upgrades in mid-July. Pro Tools 6.1 is a free update for users of Pro Tools 6.x systems and will be available in mid-July. See Digidesign's Web site for other upgrade options.
