Developing Countries Could Drive Growth of Online Poker, Says

Post Black Friday, online poker sites were badly hit. But recent reports reveal that potential markets for online poker are emerging in developing countries like India. (January 13, 2012)

LONDON, ENGLAND -- (Marketwire) -- 01/13/12 -- With online poker currently in shambles in the US and after all the events that have occurred in the last four months, poker sites are feeling discouraged from entering the US market and many companies have had to withdraw from it entirely. With a sizable population now unable to play poker online, companies are now desperate to seek alternative markets. One of the strategies to cover this loss is to promote their services in developing nations. Companies are investigating the potential of expanding their market to include developing nations, reports.

This buzz in the online gambling circuit was created following a report published by the Media Entertainment Consulting Network (MECN), which pointed out a few Asian countries and India in particular as potential markets for online poker. According to a report by 2UP, an online gaming giant, there is a potential market for poker and other forms of online gambling in the subcontinent presently. This has been proved by the fact that there is an increase in players from the subcontinent wanting to play poker online for money at the online poker rooms like PokerStars.

A management team from 2UP visited India in September, 2011 to seek partnership with potential investors offer online poker to Indians. The MECN report further stated that the potential market for online poker in India stands at above $50 billion. 2UP's managing director also stated that among the developing countries, India is the region with the highest potential for growth in online poker. How India, where gambling is illegal and is yet to make any statements on online poker, will respond to this is yet to be seen.

In certain regions of South America online gambling is generally frowned upon. The economic crisis in the last few years has led to some of these regions opening up to online poker real money games. Countries like Guyana have already established links with the likes of Antigua and Barbados, which have established themselves firmly in the online gambling circuit. So it does seem that new potential markets are opening up for online poker companies to market themselves and expand their reach.
