Detroit chief details 'Virtual Precinct' planChief details overnight closure of Detroit precinct buildings; more officers to hit streets
DETROIT (AP) ' The city of Detroit is pulling officers from desk and other duties in precincts and districts and shuttering the buildings to the public during non-peak hours.
Police Chief Ralph Godbee released details Thursday of the "Virtual Precinct" concept.
Precinct and district offices have been staffed around the clock. Beginning Monday, one east side precinct will close from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. Other precinct houses will do the same beginning Feb. 6.
Godbee says other police departments, including Milwaukee, have similar operations. It is designed to put more sworn officers on patrol to help quell Detroit's crime rate.
Instead of showing up at precincts for non-emergency services, residents are urged to contact the city's Telephone Crime Reporting Unit.
Detroit has about 2,700 officers compared to 4,000 a decade ago.
