Densebrains NextTrain Feature to Change How New Yorkers Commute

  (June 06, 2011)

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 06, 2011

Today, Densebrain, Inc., a leading New York-based digital ideas agency, in an exclusive partnership with Mobile Transit Solutions (MTS), is introducing an update to its hugely successful NYCMate application that provides New Yorkers with real-time subway arrival information. The innovative feature, NextTrain, is available on both the Android and iPhone platforms.

NextTrain utilizes the power of crowd sourcing, meaning that it will leverage a critical mass of commuters to power the feature that provides accurate and reliable information for train locations. As user support increases, the algorithm will become more intelligent at answering the question on every New Yorkers mind: When will the next train arrive?

NextTrain is a technically impressive feat. It doesnt affect battery life and is completely passive, requiring no user interaction beyond initially enabling the feature within NYCMate, a transit app for on-the-go New Yorkers that has been downloaded more than 600,000 times in just over one year on the market.

Weve been taking the subway in New York for over 100 years and somehow no one has figured out how to accurately predict when the next train is going to arrive, said Densebrain founder Jonathan Glanz. An average New York City commuter wastes over two days each year waiting for the subway. NextTrain was built to solve this problem.

The technology behind NextTrain works by picking up changes in Base Station Identification, which are the physical towers to which cell phones are connected. In every form of above ground travel, the phone connects to towers as it moves around the city. But the lack of reception in the subway, a positive for the first time, means that the phone is unable to connect to base stations along the route. Once active, NextTrain automatically notices the difference in these connections and then submits an anonymous report when the user exits the station. A central server aggregates these reports and removes any erroneous signals before updating the times within the app.

Concerns about privacy are unavoidable yet negligible with NextTrain, according to MTS founder, Alex Bell. We, like most people, take privacy very seriously, Bell said. NextTrain doesnt retrieve any unnecessary information from users phones, it doesnt monitor users locations continuously, and we dont transmit user information to any third parties. Everything is done anonymously.
