DeVry Offers Game and Sim Programming Degree Program

(July 25, 2005)

With interest in computer game technologies continuing to skyrocket, DeVry University, known for its career-oriented technology degree programs, has introduced a new Bachelor of Science degree program in game and simulation programming (GSP). DeVry will offer the eight-term program at its Long Beach, Pomona and West Hills campuses beginning in March 2006.

With the video game industry roughly 30 years old, the academic specialty of computer game technologies is relatively young. As the popularity of video games has grown and software sales have more than doubled since 1996 and sold more than $7 billion in 2003, the need for qualified game developers and programmers has increased. Many game companies are now looking for candidates with programming skills as well as the academic credentials and well-rounded education that will make them successful employees.

The game industry continues to flourish in California with California-based game companies, such as Electronic Arts Inc., THQ and Namco leading the way in growth and sales. These companies are increasingly drawing on local talent for new and innovative approaches to game design and programming.

Graduates of DeVry University's new game and simulation programming degree program, who might find positions as programmers, software engineers and project coordinators, would also be qualified for jobs in fields beyond the game industry, where integrated competencies of game and simulation design and programming come together. Examples include military tactical and strategic simulations and training, automotive design and testing, training for health care workers, crime scene reconstruction, flight simulation and any other industry that does design and prototyping work. In addition, the outlook for software engineers in the State of California is excellent, with expected growth of 45 percent over the next seven years, according to U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics employment information.

"Game development technologies are experiencing an unprecedented surge in popularity and are poised to play an important role in shaping many aspects of the entertainment industry for years to come," said Rose Marie Dishman, regional vice president of DeVry. "Similarly, simulation technologies are having an increasingly significant impact on the way a wide variety of private sector businesses and public sector entities train their employees or safely evaluate the outcome of an untested situation. Both trends are likely to continue, creating strong demand for individuals who have formal educational backgrounds in these complex and exciting areas."

DeVry University's applications-oriented game and simulation programming degree program provides preparation in the math and physics of games, programming fundamentals, game design, modifications (MOD), massively multi-player online game programming (MMOG), two- and three-dimensional graphics programming, and simulation and game engine design. As with other DeVry University degree programs, the technical elements of the degree program are supported by more traditional general education courses - an approach that ensures that students graduate with the well-rounded education they need to succeed in the workforce.

As one of the largest degree-granting higher education systems in North America, DeVry University provides high-quality, career-oriented associate, bachelor's and master's degree programs in technology, business and management. Approximately 53,000 students are enrolled at its 78 locations that are in 21 states and Canada, as well as through DeVry University Online. DeVry University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association (NCA). DeVry University, a division of DeVry Inc. (NYSE:DV), is based in Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. For more information about DeVry University, visit
