DayPort Implements Carbon Task Manager at BSkyBContent management solution for IP based content delivery (March 01, 2006)
US based company, DayPort, Inc., (the leading provider of Content Management Solutions and Content Delivery in the international market) has just implemented its Carbon Content Management System the Carbon Task Manager - for content delivery, at UK based British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB).
BSkyB - operates the UK's largest multi-channel, digital pay television platform and is a leading broadcaster of sports, movies, entertainment and news.
DayPort has installed its Carbon Task Manager, (part of its enterprise-wide Carbon Content Management System) for Sky News Interactive based in Unit 1at BSkyBs London headquarters. Unit 1 is the brand new, purpose-built facility for BSkyBs 24 hour news channel ?Sky News.
Cory Factor, CEO, DayPort, says ?We are very excited to have a progressive organisation like BSkyB join our list of customers. For DayPort, its not about the files, its about the workflow. A days life with DayPort should be much better than a days life without DayPort. We strive to make that large margin change in our customers operations.
Factor continued ?In addition to the DayPort implementation at BSkyB providing them with solutions to existing problems, we hope it will also be a foundation for the rest of the DayPort solutions to solve other BSkyB issues as they arise.
Andy Ioannou, SVP of Sales and Marketing for DayPort stated "This is another great example of DayPorts rapid expansion in the international markets. We were delighted that BSkyB approached and commissioned DayPort for their Content Management solution. BSkyB recognised that the modularised architecture of DayPorts solutions addressed their immediate key workflow and business requirements and was scaleable and dynamic enough to evolve with the changes in workflow and content delivery as well as the management needs of Sky News Interactive.
DayPort worked very closely with the team at BSkyB in order to provide them with this bespoke Carbon Task Manager solution. This is brought about by DayPorts continuing ability to provide leading broadcasters like BSkyB with solutions to meet business, operational and converging demands of Content Delivery to their customers and subscribers.
Ioannou continues ?The key feature of this project is not the transcoding element (which most will naturally be drawn to), but which we at DayPort have long since recognised is only a small component of the overall Content Delivery solution. DayPort understands that what is much more important in the world of Content Delivery, is the application of a streamlined Workflow and Content Management solution, which has the power and flexibility to provide BSkyB (and other companies) with a solution that not only meets, but exceeds their business needs, in a world where the ability to deliver content to multiple platforms and customers quickly and efficiently, with the minimum additional operational overhead, is key.
?Providing BSkyB with this system again demonstrates the rapid take up of our Carbon Content Management solutions, which are specifically designed to address the converging operational and workflow needs of broadcasters and content producers alike. These are the solutions that the market is looking for."
Currently, Sky News Interactive journalists edit news stories using Quantel sQEdit work stations which are "wrapped" around a Zone Magic, Quantel sQ Video Server architecture. The newly installed Quantel system provides the core content news production system for the Sky News channel. DayPort (through a developmental and integration partnership with Quantel announced at NAB 2005) automatically extracts content from the broadcast production system, once the content is completed and approved.
The Carbon Task Manager solution at Sky News Interactive, (which was custom-designed to meet BSkyBs workflow, operational and business requirements) enables seamless preparation formatting, management and delivery of Sky News content and metadata, (data associated with the video content such as text, title, format, length, customer, etc.) in multiple video formats, resolutions, image sizes, and aspect ratios, to additional content viewing platforms such as mobile phones, iPods, other mobile video services, broadband customers and other partners of Sky News. DayPort has provided customised User Interfaces, (designed in conjunction with the operational staff at BSkyB) to provide a seamless and transparent workflow, allowing the automated and manual delivery of content to BSkyBs customers, which include Vodafone and Orange.
Cory Factor, CEO, DayPort, ?The implementation at BSkyB has been made possible by the open architecture of the Quantel Server system and the interoperability of DayPorts DMS technology. The efficiencies gained by the BSkyB project exemplify what can really be accomplished when a true technology partnership exists between two companies (i.e. DayPort and Quantel) as opposed to a marketing ?partnership.
About the DayPort/Quantel partnership agreement
In March 2005, Quantel recognized the power of DayPorts Carbon Content Management technology solutions. As a result, a partnership agreement was announced at NAB 2005 between Quantel and DayPort. Since the announcement, DayPort has integrated its Carbon suite of products including Web publishing Content Management tools, Production Workflow Solutions and Broadcast Content, and Video Asset Management applications, with the Quantel sQ Production and Playout solutions.
This combined effort provides an enhanced layer of integration, which enables the seamless publishing of metadata and video content to a broadcasters web site or other content delivery over IP to client users which will be utilized by BSkyB for this project.
