SEATTLE, WA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/16/11 -- DataDirect Networks (DDN), the world's largest privately held information storage company, today announced its participation in a demonstration of the world's fastest international Big Data grid at the SC11 Conference, November 14-17, at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. Built with Web Object Scaler (WOS), DDN's hyperscale geo-distributed cloud storage system, large data sets will be shared in real-time among research sites around the world, demonstrating how WOS can accelerate research by facilitating analysis and collaboration across the scientific community.

At the exhibtion, DDN (Booth 2304), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Booth 2534), and RENCI/North Carolina (Booth 2942), will be connected to the Texas Advanced Computing Center in Austin, Texas; the RENaissance Computing Institute in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe, Germany.
WOS is a revolutionary object-based cloud storage system that addresses the needs of content scale-out and global data collection and distribution, enabling organizations to quickly build and deploy their own storage clouds across geographically distributed sites that can scale to unprecedented levels while still being managed as a single entity. When storage needs grow to billions of files consuming petabytes of capacity, all of which must be quickly and efficiently shared between multiple data centers, traditional solutions become complex to deploy, hard to manage, difficult to scale, and overly expensive. The international data grid also leverages the Integrated Rule-Oriented Data System (iRODS), an innovative "rules engine" that enables researchers to easily accomplish complex data management tasks by applying management policies to control the execution of all data access and manipulation operations. Funded by a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation and developed in part by researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of California, San Diego, this user-friendly, open-source rules engine is easily customizable for the specific data management needs of nearly any research group.
Also being shown at the DDN booth is a WOS cloud demonstrating private, secure, "drop-in" file access for researchers, faculty and students to share data, and WOS NFS access capabilities -- all in a single WOS infrastructure that can consolidate much of an institution's unstructured data storage and lower management costs.
