DataDirect Networks' (DDN) WOS Cloud Storage System Accelerates Scientific Discovery and Insight Across International Collaborative Big Data Grid

With DDN Technology, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, RENaissance Computing Institute, and Texas Advanced Computing Center Process and Share Large Data Sets Between International Supercomputing Facilities, Demonstrating How Big Data Grids Accelerate Dis (November 16, 2011)

SEATTLE, WA -- (Marketwire) -- 11/16/11 -- DataDirect Networks (DDN), the world's largest privately held information storage company, today announced its participation in a demonstration of the world's fastest international Big Data grid at the SC11 Conference, November 14-17, at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle. Built with Web Object Scaler™ (WOS™), DDN's hyperscale geo-distributed cloud storage system, large data sets will be shared in real-time among research sites around the world, demonstrating how WOS can accelerate research by facilitating analysis and collaboration across the scientific community.

"We are pleased that WOS is facilitating a groundbreaking level of collaboration between research institutions that are forging new horizons for both computing and scientific research," said Dave Fellinger, Chief Scientist, DataDirect Networks. "WOS revolutionizes the data collaboration paradigm by enabling easy to manage, hyper-scalable, high-performance infrastructure with rich, policy-based collaboration tools which power iRODS-based collaborative Big Data research workflows."

At the exhibtion, DDN (Booth 2304), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Booth 2534), and RENCI/North Carolina (Booth 2942), will be connected to the Texas Advanced Computing Center in Austin, Texas; the RENaissance Computing Institute in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe, Germany.

WOS is a revolutionary object-based cloud storage system that addresses the needs of content scale-out and global data collection and distribution, enabling organizations to quickly build and deploy their own storage clouds across geographically distributed sites that can scale to unprecedented levels while still being managed as a single entity. When storage needs grow to billions of files consuming petabytes of capacity, all of which must be quickly and efficiently shared between multiple data centers, traditional solutions become complex to deploy, hard to manage, difficult to scale, and overly expensive. To solve these challenges, DDN has developed WOS as the world's fastest cloud storage system, capable of scalable performance 70 percent faster than Amazon S3™ (1) and more than 100 times faster than EMC's Atmos™ technology (2).

The international data grid also leverages the Integrated Rule-Oriented Data System (iRODS), an innovative "rules engine" that enables researchers to easily accomplish complex data management tasks by applying management policies to control the execution of all data access and manipulation operations. Funded by a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation and developed in part by researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of California, San Diego, this user-friendly, open-source rules engine is easily customizable for the specific data management needs of nearly any research group.

Also being shown at the DDN booth is a WOS cloud demonstrating private, secure, "drop-in" file access for researchers, faculty and students to share data, and WOS NFS access capabilities -- all in a single WOS infrastructure that can consolidate much of an institution's unstructured data storage and lower management costs.

"In building a high-speed Big Data grid with other leading research institutions, we have demonstrated the power of leading-edge technologies including DDN WOS and iRODS to facilitate collaboration on a level not previously achievable," said Jos van Wezel, Data Access and Data Management group lead, Steinbuch Centre for Computing at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. "The ability of researchers in different parts of the world to share work, data, and ideas in real time has the potential to revolutionize science, and we are very pleased to be part of this exciting project."

"This international data grid demonstrates how researchers can participate in collaborative research while analyzing massive data collections," said Reagan Moore, principal investigator for the Data Intensive Cyber Environments (DICE) research group at UNC-Chapel Hill and RENCI chief scientist for data grids. "An iRODs-based WOS infrastructure greatly minimizes the effort required to manage and distribute large scientific data sets and make them available for such research."

"Highly reliable and flexible storage at the multi-petabyte scale is critical for the research community. This demonstration shows that we are able to use WOS to create a globally accessible storage cloud. Integration with iRODS helps to make large-scale data collections with complex policy-based workflows available to scientists and engineers around the world," said Chris Jordan, Data Management and Collections Group Lead, Texas Advanced Computing Center, the University of Texas at Austin.
