Daniel Rosen Elected Chairman of Hollywood Section SMPTEHollywood section of SMPTE picks new officers (August 20, 2004)
Daniel S. Rosen, vice president, Engineering, Warner Bros. Advanced Media Services Inc., has been elected chairman of the Hollywood section of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). The section has some 1,500 members, including technology thought leaders, manufacturers and practitioners from all sectors of the entertainment industry. There are also student chapters at UCLA, USC, Chapman College and Pasadena City College.
"SMPTE was founded in 1916 for the purpose of recommending technology standards and practices, which expanded the horizons of content creators for the new motion picture industry," Rosen says. "It formed close ties with the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) when that organization was founded in 1919. We are committed to re-energizing our historic connection with the ASC and other individuals and organizations responsible for creating entertainment content for the motion picture and television industries, because new technology that doesn't serve the needs of the story-tellers is merely an intellectual exercise."
Rosen began his engineering career at TRW (now Northrop Grumman), which provided cutting-edge technology for the military services and NASA. He was then appointed chief engineer for animation technology at DreamWorks, SKG in 1995 before being named chief technology officer at Cinesite in 2000. Rosen joined Warner Bros. Advanced Media Services in his current role last year.
The other new section officers are secretary-treasurer Patricia Keighley (DKP 70MM, Inc., an IMAX company), past chair Dave Wiswell (Panasonic), managers Bruce Burke (Kodak), Leon Silverman (Kodak/LaserPacific), Richard Dean (THX, Inc.), Bob Olson (Technicolor), Ralph Sargeant (Film Technology Co., Inc.), appointed managers Kevin Stec (Dolby), Nancy Wilkerson (Walt Disney Company), Kassa Zakadi (Pasadena City College), governors Darcy Antonellis (Warner Bros. Entertainment), Alan Masson (Kodak), Charles Swartz (Entertainment Technology Center), website manager Richard P. May (Warner Bros. Technical Operations), membership chair Greg Boren (Panasonic), education co-chair Milton Shefter (Miljoy Enterprises, Inc.) and test materials advisor Paul Carey (Marketing Specialists, Inc.)
