Dallas Pastor Ed Young Responds to New Study Showing Sexual Intimacy in Decline

According to a New Study From Germany, Social Media Is, for Many of Us, More Addictive Than Sex -- and as a Result, Our Marriages Could Be in Trouble; Ed Young Counters These Findings With Teachings on Lasting Happiness and Marital Intimacy (April 19, 2012)

GRAPEVINE, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 04/19/12 -- For many of us, our smartphone is an ever-present accessory. It can prove difficult to go even a few moments without checking our e-mail, or logging into our favorite social networks. But the beckoning presence of Facebook and Twitter is hardly as innocuous as many of us would like to believe. In fact, a new study, reported by CNN, suggests that addiction to social media is, for many, every bit as strong as the addiction to sex. While this may be good news for Facebook shareholders and advertisers, however, it is hardly good news for married couples. Dallas pastor Ed Young offers teachings that counter the implications of the new study, including the teachings found in his new book, Sexperiment.

Indeed, the CNN report draws the conclusion that sex is increasingly undervalued in our society, with the allure of social media proving a greater draw on our attention. Ed Young has long taught that sex is an important part of marital happiness, and that a robust sex life is ultimately vital for sustaining a happy marriage in the long term. These teachings are crystallized in the just-released Sexperiment.

In the book, which the pastor wrote alongside wife Lisa, Dallas minister Ed Young argues that, while sex is not the most important facet of marriage, it is far from unimportant, and that a healthy sex life can offer many benefits. Much of Sexperiment details these benefits, which include stronger channels of communication, a greater standard of purity, and increased oneness as a couple. The book, which Young wrote primarily with Christian married couples in mind, also contends that a good sex life helps us better understand "God's purpose for marriage."

But the book is not just a list of benefits. Sexperiment also offers readers a challenge. In particular, Young exhorts married couples to have sex together every day for a week.

While the pastor is well aware of the stereotypes regarding marital intimacy, he maintains that couples will be surprised at the profound, positive impact that a good sex life has on their marriage. Sexperiment outlines various tips for sustaining a sex life that is regular, passionate, and creative.

And while the CNN study finds that sex is, if anything, underappreciated in many of our lives, Ed Young teaches that it is ultimately vital for building strong marriages. He even recommends his new book for use in church discussion groups and Sunday School classes.

Ed Young is the founding pastor of Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas. He has written 13 books, including his latest release, Sexperiment: 7 Days to Lasting Intimacy with Your Spouse. The book, co-authored with his wife, Lisa, has garnered a great deal of attention for its unconventional take on the importance of sex within a marriage. While many religious leaders avoid the topic, Ed Young has preached the importance of intimacy within a marriage for years.
