DVD Studio Pro Quick Tip: Stories

Don't re-encode your footage; repurpose it! By Dave Nagel
It's easy to get well into a DVD project before you realize you've made an awful, time-consuming mistake. Take, for example, a case in which an author encodes a track with chapter markers and sets the end jump of each chapter back to the main menu, realizing too late that there's now no way to play entirely through the movie. What does he or she do now? Re-encode the movie, or go back and reset all of the end jump? Neither. There's actually a simple, quick fix for this one: the Story feature in DVD Studio Pro.

The concept of the Story in a DVD project is a simple one: It allows you to rearrange chapters in a track for multiple presentations of the track without the waste of time and space that would be required if you were to create separate tracks for every possible configuration. Typically, this feature is used for shuffling around chapters or creating shorter versions of the main movie (so that, for example, you might be able to have a version of the movie with and without deleted scenes). However, it can also be used to fix up the problem at hand: taking a series of chapters that each jump back to the main menu and combining them into one continuous movie.

Here's the problem. For our simple example, we have a track that has three chapter markers.

Each one of these, in turn, end jumps back to the main menu.

But we also want to create a version of this movie in which the chapters don't jump; rather, the chapters play in sequence one to the next. To fix up this mess without re-encoding (which wastes time and space) and without going back and undoing all of those chapter markers (which just wastes time), we just need to follow a few simple steps.

1. Create the story. To do this, select your track in the Outline tab.

Then choose Project > Add to Project > Story (Shift-Command-T). This will add a story in the Outline tab beneath the track.
