Carey Named VP of Post
(July 05, 2011)
Light Iron has appointed Des Carey as VP of Post Production for the facility at its new location in Hollywood. Carey comes to Light Iron from Company 3 where he was a Senior Digital Intermediate Producer/VFX Supervisor. His wide portfolio of projects includes ?300, ?The Conspirator, ?Terminator: Salvation, ?Quantum of Solace, ?Watchmen, ?Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End and ?Transformers.
Carey has had a prolific career in post production. He studied industrial design and engineering in Ireland, from where he hails. After graduation, he set his sights on the US, landing a job at Lucas Film as a film archivist, and subsequently became George Lucas editorial apprentice. ?It was an exciting time as the industry was just beginning to move from film to digital, says Carey, ?I was able to learn so much and experiment with model making and editorial. His interest in digital finishing took off while working on ?The Empire Strikes Back special edition for its re-release in 1997. ?We were doing things that no one else was doing at the time digitally. In 1999 he joined Tippett Studio where he was the Post Production Supervisor/Supervising VFX Editor on projects that included ?The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and ?The Stepford Wives. Carey is excited about the future of Light Iron. He feels that the post production industry is changing, and that Hollywood is becoming Hollywood again. ?Clients are returning to the independent facilities, which offer innovative solutions that make the post process fast and precise, and that increase filmmakers' creative control over their projects, all in a more intimate work environment, says Carey. ?Light Iron is at the forefront of this new wave, evidenced by the addition of Directors Steven Soderbergh, David Fincher, Jon Chu, Bill Paxton, and Stephen Sommers to their client roster. ?Des complements our team extremely well, says Light Iron CEO Michael Cioni. ?He has a great track record and understands the intricacies of running a successful digital intermediate franchise. As Light Iron continues to redefine DI, we are fortunate that Des is on our side.
