Cycling '74 Ships Max and MSP for Mac OS X

New release supports CoreAudio, CoreMIDI By Dave Nagel
Cycling '74 has released Max and MSP for Mac OS X. Max is a graphical programming environment for the creation of patches. MSP is a collection of objects to be used with Max for creating patches for audio. The Mac OS X versions are free updates for users of Max 4 and MSP 2.

Max is generally used as a development environment for creating applications and interactive presentations for live performances. The software allows users to build programs, or patches, through the use of graphical symbols, which range from objects that perform calculations to interface elements. MSP adds a number of these objects for building patches specific to audio for controlling the flow of signals. The combination of the two, known simply as Max/MSP, takes advantage of Mac OS X's CoreAudio and CoreMIDI. The software is otherwise similar to the pre-Mac OS X versions.

Max is available now for $250. Max with MSP sells for $495. The Mac OS X version of Max/MSP is available as a free update to users of Max 4 and MSP 2. For more information, visit
