Crews ready fuel delivery to iced-in AK villageCrews ready hose to deliver fuel to iced-in Alaska village
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ' Crews are readying a segmented hose that will deliver much needed fuel to an iced-in Alaskan town.
Sitnasuak Native Corp. board chairman Jason Evans says the Russian tanker inched closer on Saturday to the iced harbor of Nome, a village of about 3,500 people.
He says the vessel's crew hopes to moor about 500 yards from the harbor. From there, the segmented hose will be installed to unload 1.3 million gallons of fuel.
Personnel will walk the entire length of the hose every 30 minutes to check it for leaks. Each segment will have its own spill containment area, and extra absorbent boom will be on hand in case of a spill.
Evans says ice ridges are too high to actually reach the harbor.
