Conway Recording Studios Installs Neve 88R In Storied Studio ANew Large-Format Analog Console Starts Work Immediately (September 10, 2001)
Training on the 88R was very straightforward, according to Conway Chief Engineer Dave Hecht. "Although the automation is far more comprehensive than our previous system, the new interface makes the system easier to use. Sonically, the 88R is a huge improvement over the VR. It has a sound very reminiscent of the old 80 series Neves, with all the facilities of a modern console. So far, everyone who has listened to it has been completely knocked out by the sound quality."
Conway Recording Studios has a 72-channel VR console in Studio B, and each of its three rooms have Neve 33609J compressors and 1081 mic pre amp equalizers.
Conway Co-Owner Buddy Brundo describes the 88R's straightforward operation as key to the studio's creative process: "An engineer can move around the board without losing the creative moment, and that moment is what we live for here. It must be captured while it is happening, and never be lost because a mixer is pre-occupied with a technical concern."
Brundo also points to the moving fader automation as a great step forward in console design: "I love the fact that the 88R gives us a logical step forward in automation. The moving fader automation on the mini faders and the overall sonic quality are amazing in our new system. It does everything our previous console did, but faster and more completely. It's the next generation of automation."
"The 88R is outstanding because it has the classic Neve 1081s and Monsterrat remote mic pre amps and a class-A front end," Brundo added.
Hecht counts the automated soft switches and redesigned EQ's as additional benefits of the new 88R. "And this console was designed to be 5.1 capable from the ground up," said Hecht. "That in-depth capacity will prove invaluable on many of our music and feature film projects."
Hecht believes that with the 88R's reworked signal path and remote mic pre amps, many rock musicians who previously gravitated toward the older AMS Neve analog consoles, will be drawn to the 88R. He said he's already received many calls as to the board's availability. The 88R is booked solidly through October.
Multi-platinum Italian artist Laura Pausini is the first to use the new 88R at Conway. She is recording her first English album for Warner Bros. with a combination of engineers including Marty Beall, Al Hemberger and Steve Churchyard. Producers include Narada Michael Walden, Sturken and Rogers, and Kara Dio Guardi. Seal will come in after Pausini to mix a new album for Warner Reprise with engineer Steve Fitzmaurice. Fitzmaurice will then continue working in Studio A with artist Amanda Ghost.
Conway Recording Studios has been the recording home to such famed albums as Dave Matthews Band's Everyday, Blink 182's Enema of the State, Christina Aguilera's self-titled album, Hole's Celebrity Skin, Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals, Beck's Odelay, Fleetwood Mac's The Dance, Eric Clapton's Change the World, Bonnie Raitt's Luck of the Draw, and U2's Rattle and Hum.
Conway has also hosted sessions for many feature film scores and soundtracks, including: the upcoming All That Glitters, Sleepless in Seattle; Love, Valor, Compassion; Toy Story; Til There Was You; Michael; and Beavis and Butthead.
The 88R is the first all-new AMS Neve large-format audio console in nearly 20 years. It enables recording at the best conceivable quality onto any format at any sample rate, capturing all the energy and atmosphere of the original performance as perfectly as possible. The no compromise design is linear from start to finish, with no VCAs - even in the monitor section. The 88R offers the world's most powerful automation system, Encore, with moving mini and large faders. Designed from scratch for 5.1 as well as stereo, it includes comprehensive surround capabilities as standard.
AMS Neve is a world leader in the manufacture of professional audio equipment. The company supplies digital and analogue mixing consoles and hard disk recorder/editors for film and video post-production, broadcast, music recording and live/theatre applications.
