Congressman criticizes Ohio nuke plant's restartOhio congressman criticizes decision allowing nuclear plant to reopen after concrete cracks
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) ' A congressman is criticizing a decision allowing an Ohio nuclear reactor to reopen after cracks were discovered in protective concrete at the plant.
Cleveland Democrat Dennis Kucinich (koo-SIN'-ich) said Monday federal regulators are giving the plant a green light to restart before knowing what caused the cracks and whether it's a bigger problem.
Members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Friday the operator of the Davis-Besse (BEH'-see) nuclear plant outside Toledo gave them reasonable assurance the cracks don't pose a threat.
Regulators say they've also done their own checks and reviewed testing already completed by plant operator FirstEnergy Corp.
The plant along Lake Erie was shut down in October for installation of an 82-ton reactor head. Soon afterward, crews discovered a 30-foot hairline crack in the outer wall.
