Concord 5340z Digital Camera

$199 entry level 5.1 megapixel digital camera By John Virata

As digital cameras have fast become commodity products, manufacturers of these devices have been releasing more models that capture more pixels, all for less money. Concord Camera Corp., a third tier player in the digital camera space, has released the Concord 5340z, a 5.1 megapixel point and shoot digital camera with a 3X optical zoom for the previously unheard of price of $199. Just a few years ago, $199 would get you a 3 megapixel digital camera. So how does this camera perform? Let's take a look after we go through the spec sheet.

The Concord 5340z is about the size of a deck of cards but a bit thicker. Housed in a metal body, the 5340z features a 2-inch TFT color LCD and a miniscule viewfinder, smaller than a pencil eraser tip. It sports a 3X optical zoom lens and 16MB of internal memory. It accepts SD memory cards for further expandability. It captures still JPEG formatted images in fine and normal mode in the following formats: 2592x1944 (5MP), 2304x1728 (4.0MP), 1600x1200 (2.0MP), and 640x480 (VGA). In addition to capturing still images, the 5340z can capture 30 frames per second MPEG-4 movies with sound at 320 x 240 resolution. It is built around a Panasonic 1/2.5" CCD sensor, and has a 5.9-17.18mm (35-103 equivalent), lens at f/2.69-f/5.0. It sports an ISO rating of 70 and has a focusing range of 1.6 feet to infinity (macro is rated at 3.9 inches). Built in picture effects include black and white, sepia, and vivid.

White balance functions include auto white balance, sunny, cloudy, tungsten, and fluorescent. maxmum shutter speed is 1/2000 second, and the flash unit includes Auto, on, off, and red eye reduction controls. It is powered by two AA batteries and supports alkaline, Lithium, and NiMH rechargeable batteries. It weighs 160 grams and measures 3.6 x 1.2 x 2.4 inches. the camera can be connected to a computer via a built in USB port, and can also be connected to a TV via a built in TV out port Cables for USB and TV out are included in the $199 price. The 5340z ships with MGI PhotoSuite, Vista, Acrobat Reader, and canera drivers for Windows 98. Also included in the box are two AA batteries, black velvet-like pouch, wrist strap, Quick Start Guide, Warranty card, CD-ROM drivers, and a multi language users guide in Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Russian, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portugese, French, and English.
