Conax Conditional Access Technology Certified By TTAConax CAS7 CableCARD certified according to the Korean OpenCable standard (June 09, 2005)
Conax AS, a leading supplier of conditional access technology for digital TV, today announced that it has achieved certification of its Conax CAS7 CableCARD according to the Korean OpenCable standard for digital cable television broadcasting.
Conax's conditional access technology has passed the compliance tests performed by the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA), and Conax is thereby officially approved as supplier of CA systems and CableCARDs to the Korean cable market.
Conax has worked closely with SCM Microsystems (SCM) to achieve certification of its conditional access technology, using SCM CableCARD hardware and middleware. The security module is based on the Korean OpenCable standard for digital cable television broadcasts. Conax is the first CA vendor to obtain the TTA certification including the copy protection function.
"We are very pleased and proud to get the official approval for our CA technology by the Korean Government as the first CA supplier to complete the Phase 1 certification including copy protection. Conax is now ready for the Korean market. This certification is also a step in the process of getting Conax CA technology approved for the US cable market," said Ole Hansvold, Executive Vice President and COO of Conax AS.
"At the end of last year KCTV Jeju Island decided to deploy SCM's CableCARD with Conax CA for their digital cable operation, as the first independent CATV system operator to build a digital broadcasting system in Korea. With the successful implementation of the Jeju project and the official certificate from TTA, we look forward to exploiting further business opportunities with Conax in Korea," said Robert Schneider, Chief Executive Officer of SCM Microsystems.
The Korean government will be deploying digital cable television to between six and nine million households in Korea over the next several years. In November 2001, the Korean government selected OpenCable as the technical standard for securing the country's digital cable TV broadcasts. By adopting this open standards-based broadcast security model, the Korean government hopes to create a digital television industry that is both competitive for consumers and profitable for operators. OpenCable was originally developed by Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs) for the North American cable TV market and subsequently was adapted for use in Korea. Although the Korean security module is based on the same OpenCable CableCARD interface specification used in the US, the Korean security modules will not operate with US OpenCable devices, or vice versa, for regional security purposes.
Conax will be exhibiting at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in San Antonio this June 14-17 (Booth No. 9024), where it will be demonstrating Conax CAS7 to the digital broadcast industry.
