Comdex: Toshiba Updates CD-R/DVD Drives, Launches Projector

DLP projector offers 1,000 ANSI lumen brightness By Dave Nagel
Toshiba today announced an updated lineup of recordable CD drives, as well as its first DLP-based home theater projector. The updated drives include Toshiba's combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM and its mobile CD-RW.

The new comb drive now writes at 16x, rewrites at 10x, reads CD-ROMs at 40x and reads DVDs at 12x. The mobile CD-RW drive also now writes at 16x, rewrites at 10x and reads at 24x. Toshiba says the new write speed is the fastest available in a slim mobile drive. Both models include a 2 MB buffer.

The new combo drive will be available this month. The mobile CD-RW drive will be available in December. Pricing information was not available at press time.

On the projector side, Toshiba has introduced its first DLP-based home theater unit. The new MT5 projector measures 10.3 inches x 11 1inches x 3.5 inches and weighs six pounds. It uses Toshiba's optics and a quad-speed, six-segment color wheel and offers 1,000 ANSI lumens of brightness and a 600:1 contrast ratio.

It also includes video processing circuitry for deinterlacing, per-pixel motion compensation, 3:2 and 2:2 pulldown film-mode detection and cross-color suppression. It can accept RGB and HDTV signals, as well as DV, component, composite and S-video. (It has two computer inputs, including DVI RS232 control.)

The MT5 supports 16:9 and 4:3 image ratios, including standard and anamorphic signals. It features a selection of pre-set Image Control modes for better reproduction of film, video and computer-based content, as well as manual picture adjustment. It also offers digital keystone correction.

The MT5 will be available this month for $4,995.99. For more information, visit
