Comdex: NEC Intros LCD Monitors, CRT Calibration Systems

SpectraView provides direct calibration commands to monitors By Dave Nagel
NEC-Mitsubishi has introduced two new LCD monitors and several CRT monitors that use NEC's new color calibration system. The two new LCD displays are both 15-inch models, while the new CRT systems range from 19 inches to 22 inches.

The two new 15-inch flat panel monitors include the MultiSync LCD1550M and LCD1550X, priced at $499 and $549, respectively. The LCD1550M offers internal multimedia capabilities and front-firing speakers. The LCD1550X uses NEC's Ambix technology for a standardized Digital Video Interface (DVI-I) connector to accept a digital or analog input, as well as a second analog input through a traditional VGA connector. The LCD1550X also offers a wider viewing angle (170 degrees horizontal and vertical) and the ability to pivot for portrait or landscape mode. Other features of both monitors include:

  • Native resolutions of 1,024 x 768
  • Weight of 9.9 lbs with the stand
  • Onscreen controls for customization
  • Automatic adjustment for the initial powerup
  • Optional touch and glass protection features.

Both monitors will be available in December.

On the CRT front, NEC-Mitsubishi has introduced its new SpectraView calibration system, which is included with three different monitor models. These include the MultiSync FP955, MultiSync FP1375X and Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2060u flat aperture grille CRT monitors. The system includes a detachable hood, a color calibrator and software.

SpectraView uses onscreen color measurements using a tri-stimulus colorimeter and custom software to make adjustments directly to the monitors by way of a DDC/CI communications channel. This technology can control the RGB gains directly, resulting in better luminance and black colors and more accurate calibration, according to NEC.

SpectraView uses three 24-bit AD converters to measure color at five measurements per second either at absolute white or black. The software analyzes the color read by the calibrator, adjusts and calculates display gamma and white point values and corrects these figures to accommodate current ambient light. The system also includes ICC monitor color profiles for compatibility with other color management systems.

The SpectraView family of monitors will be available in early December. The Diamond Pro 2060-SV will be available for $1,599; the 22-inch FP1375X-SV will sell for $1,749; and the 19-inch FP955-SV will sell for $1,149. For more information, visit
