'Color' and the downside of Apple take-overs
Stuart Maschwitz is the founder of The Orphanage; the well respected
VFX house and software developer. The Orphanage are perhaps best known
for there development of the superb Magic Bullet plugins for colour
filtering and film-look video processing availible for a wide range of
NLE platforms such as Premiere Pro, Vegas and Final Cut.
On his blog
Maschwitz take a lengthy disertation at Apple for their practice of
taking over specialist apps (such as Final Touch which is now called
Colour and part of the FCS box) along with the highly insular and
secretive nature of their development process which Maschwitz laments
makes long-term third-party development highly problematic and frustrating.
"The Orphanage, no longer has any special relationship with Apple. It's
just too much of a one-way street. I can't buy my bread-and-butter
tools from someone who can't conduct an open conversation with me
(under NDA of course) about the future of the product."
