Coast Guard OKs winding down BP spill cleanup

Coast Guard approves winding down of BP spill cleanup; Gulf shore restoration starts By The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ' The Coast Guard is ready to reduce BP's responsibility for cleaning up oil that may still wash ashore on the U.S. Gulf Coast after last year's spill, a move officials said opens a new phase of work for BP ' restoring areas damaged by the largest offshore spill in U.S. history.

A new Coast Guard plan obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday "provides the mechanisms for ceasing active clean-up operations."

The Coast Guard spells out protocol for ending the cleanup that has been going on since April 20, 2010, when the Deepwater Horizon exploded off the Louisiana coast.

Coast Guard spokeswoman Lt. Suzanne Kerver says the shoreline plan outlines "the standard for clean."
