CoCreate, R&B Develop Collaborative Product Development Solutions

CoCreate Software today announced four key technologies, developed in conjunction with R&B Mold and Die Design of Israel, that are slated to appear by year's end in a new range of solutions for the plastics industry. The technologies -- which leapfrog conventional 2D- and 3D-based approaches -- will offer a full set of plastic product design capabilities, including design for manufacture, mold design and mold assembly design:

-- DMOX, which automatically leverages and refines any design;


-- Advisor technology, which proactively considers design-for-manufacturability;

-- New, real-time collaboration technology; and

-- Easy-to-use and complete plastics capabilities.

The Technologies

DMOX (Dynamic Modeling Open eXtensions) -- CoCreate's innovative DMOX technology is central to the new plastic- and mold-design solutions. It helps accelerate the product development process by allowing designers automatically reuse and continue to evolve the plastic design from any customer -- irrespective of CAD system -- using either native direct interfaces that are available for all leading CAD solutions or through CoCreate's award-winning solutions for industry standard formats such as IGES, STEP and SAT.

DMOX also allows continued working and evolution of the design within CoCreate's Solution Suite, irrespective of original CAD systems. This allows unprecedented levels of flexibility when further modifying or refining designs, or when building subsequent molding and tooling around the original plastic design. In addition, it allows fully flexible modifications to the part, tool or mold design, irrespective of the history or constraint mechanism. This means designers can evolve their designs quickly, with minimal training and without having to understand the capabilities of multiple systems.

DMOX, which supports IGES, STEP and SAT, provides solutions to leverage and continue to work on designs from any of the following systems' native formats: Pro/Engineer, Catia, I-DEAS, Unigraphics and SolidWorks.

Advisor Technology -- CoCreate's Advisor technology, another key component of the plastics-industry solutions, will offer proactive advice during the product development process, helping designers avoid design flaws and consider the design-for-manufacture of plastic parts, molds and mold assemblies. Key components of this technology include the following:

-- Ready-to-use libraries -- These libraries of preferred features and parts include predefined plastic form features that contain specific rules reflecting plastics knowledge and that provide proactive advice;

-- Modifiable rules -- All predefined rules can be modified and adjusted

to reflect a company's specific knowledge and experience;

-- Undercut analysis -- This capability enables designers to detect critical areas of the plastic design early in the design phase;

-- Wall-thickness analysis -- This capability allows designers to analyze critical areas of the plastic design for minimal and maximal wall-thickness conditions; and

-- Collision- and clearance-checking of all holes and cooling system in the mold assembly.

"With this extensive solution suite, CoCreate will completely support the plastic-parts design process, from concept to final product on the manufacturing floor," said Tilman F. Schad, president and chief executive officer of CoCreate.

Easy-to-use and Complete Plastics Capabilities - These capabilities include features targeted for plastics part designers, and for mold and toolmakers:

For Plastics Part Designers:

-- Surface creation and analysis tools for high-quality designs;

-- Solid, surface and hybrid modeling, including design of sculptured surfaces, modification, annotation, advanced photo-realistic imaging and data exchange;

-- Complete part and assembly modeling and modification;

-- Surface analysis and optimization tools;

-- Integration of customer-specific form features into the plastic feature catalog; and

-- Coring, to remove material concentrations along a given face or area using a minimal wall thickness, including automatic consideration of undercut situations.

For Mold and Toolmakers:

-- Scale, to compensate shrinkage behavior of plastic components, isotropic or anisotropic;

-- Intelligent split-up faces for optional parting-line creation;

-- Fill Surface Creation for easy creation of fill surfaces inside the mold to control splitting of the mold in holes or cut-out areas;

-- Complete set of capabilities for core and cavity creation;

-- Automatic mold-base generation;

-- Standard and non-standard mold bases;

-- Easily created and manipulated multi-cavity inserts;

-- Intuitive Cooling design tools, with collision and clearance checking;

-- Intelligent ability to add commercial or noncommercial components such as ejector pins, screws, dowels, O-rings, slides, lifters and many more

components; and

-- Wide range of catalog and standard parts ready to use during the product development process. More than 15 commercial catalogs, such as DME, National, Progressive, Hasco, Futuba and Misumi.

New, Real-time Collaboration Technology -- The new solutions will include options for real-time collaboration among designers and all experts involved in the plastics development process. This collaboration capability enables all parties to easily demonstrate and understand, for example, the effect of a product change on the mold-form creation, or how an undercut situation can be reduced on the model to reduce the cost of the mold. Key highlights of the technology include the following:

-- Ready-to-use collaboration;

-- Secured collaboration sessions;

-- Shared views, pointers and whiteboarding for in-depth discussions and problem resolving; and

-- Co-modeling capabilities for all participants.
