Cleaner 5 Set for OS X Release

Update free for current users By DMN Staff Writer
Cleaner 5 will soon be released for Mac OS X, according to Discreet, the program's new owner. Cleaner is a video and audio encoding and compression utility that can output to a variety of formats for the Web, CD or DVD distribution. Discreet recently purchased cleaner 5 from Media 100, along with cleaner EZ, cleaner live, mpeg charger, mpeg supercharger and cinestream and introDV.

The forthcoming release will be a minor one, introducing no new features beyond the support for Mac OS X. In addition, the OS X version will be limited in that it can't output to the Real format because there is no native Real encoder for Mac OS X yet. However, the application will work in both OS 9 and OS X, so users can switch back and forth depending on their needs. According to Discreet, the OS X version of cleaner 5 is multithreaded, so it can take advantage of multiple processors.

The company has not announced a specific date for the release but says it will be available in early 2002. There are no plans as yet to release an OS X version of cleaner EZ, which is a "lite" version of cleaner that ships with several third-party programs. We'll bring you more on cleaner 5 in the coming days. For more information, visit
