Citizen Pictures Produces Trio Of Promos For Discovery

From Choppers to Beaches and Life?s Greatest Miracle (March 11, 2005)

Snappy, fun and unforgettable can best describe a series of three promo packages Citizen Pictures recently completed for the Discovery Family of Networks most popular shows. The programs the promos support include: Biker Build-Off, Travel Channels 2005 Beach Week and Discovery Health Channels Birth Day Live.

As diverse as the promo packages are, each shares a common thread that vividly teases the coming attraction. Each flawlessly mirrors the program it promotes and features the distinctive styles and messages each brings to its audience.

The most humorous of the three is Citizen Pictures work for Travel Channels 2005 Beach Week, which was shot in both Super 16 and HD. The promo was partially shot on location in Punta Allen, Mexico and in a studio for green screen work. Digital stills and stock video were also employed in the production.

The spot cleverly features a day-in-the-life of a Travel Channel video crew, dispelling the notion that they enjoy the dreamiest job on earth?that is until the Beach Week assignment comes along. While frolicking on the beach, soaking in rays the narrator informs the viewer that never before has a crew gone missing until now, no matter how rugged the assignment. Images of the crew braving 50-below arctic storms, 120-degree deserts and risking life and limb to track the indigenous tribes of the Amazon support the spoof that somehow they always made it out alive but shooting Beach Week is another story.

Switching gears, Discovery Health Channels, Birth Day Live, captured the miracle of childbirth. The 10-hour broadcast follows real women preparing for and giving birth, live on national television. Unlike the program, Citizen Pictures hired actors Mom, Dad, Doctor and Nurse to capture the sense of ?reality of the series in the controlled atmosphere of a film shoot. ?We wanted to help the audience discover what it is like to go through the birthing process, said Director, Jeanne Kopeck, of Citizen Pictures. ?By using actors and a ?signature POV to close-up camera move, the spot provided a look at the dramatic event from the perspective of the participants, the mother in particular.

From beaches and babies to the world of tattooed muscles and incomparable works of art masquerading as motorcycles, Citizen Pictures also tackled Discoverys mega-popular, Biker Build-Off. This reality based series pits two leading chopper builders from different parts of the U.S. against each other to see who can build the best one-of-a-kind custom motorcycle. The promo was shot on-location in LA in 35mm with two of the series competitors. ?We shot most of the spot with broken cameras to capture a grungy, gritty look and light effects that only a cracked lens and distressed camera housing can provide, said Kopeck ?I was able to achieve the mood and scratchiness I wanted all through the artistry of performing in-camera effects.

The promo opens in moody dark light with a slow pan down a sweaty, tattoo-laden arm. The camera continues, stopping at a hand clenching a greasy wrench, knuckle-busting rings on every finger. The scene spins into a succession of chaotic shots showcasing tricked-out choppers almost too perfect to ride.
