Circular Logic Launches New Versions of InTime

InTime Tempo Tracking System now available on Mac OS X and Windows (September 30, 2004)

Circular Logic has launched new versions of the InTime Tempo Tracking System: version 1.1.1 for Windows, and version 1.0 for the Mac OS X operating system. This release brings InTime to the Mac platform for the first time. The InTime 1.1.1 update for Windows offers more efficient processor usage than previous versions, and new features: Mini Controls Window; Relative Tempo Limits; and increased Tracking Bias range.

InTime is the only true tempo tracking system available commercially, and it is destined to expand the ways in which musicians think about performing and creating music with computers. With InTime, musicians play freely, and the computer follows their tempo changes in real-time, allowing natural expression in computer-assisted live performance, composition and recording. Fully-functioning demo versions are available for download at www.circular-logic.com.

Musicians are free to improvise because InTime does not need to know in advance what the user intends to play. It is capable of following broad, sweeping tempo fluctuations, as well as the subtle nuances of playing with a groove, both with remarkable accuracy. The favorite use of InTime is to synchronize software sequencers and effects to a live drummer or other musician, so the performers are no longer stuck following the rigid timing of a computer. Other users take advantage of InTime's natural tempo tracking to record tracks with a natural feel, improve the accuracy of notation software, or even have a light show sync up to what they play.

Years of research and development have gone into InTime, the first in a line of tempo-tracking related products the company plans to release. "There are a lot of wonderfully creative musicians using computers to help them make music," says Circular Logic President, Dr. Edward Large, "and we're very excited about making InTime's unique capabilities available to them on both the Mac OS X and Windows platforms. InTime provides a revolutionary way of approaching computer music, but the idea behind it is pretty simple: play music and your computer will follow you." Dr. Large continues, "It's something that musicians have wanted for a long time, but have mostly given up on. We're proud to offer InTime as a solution to a common problem with using computers for music - keeping the human feel."

InTime can work as a sync master, driving other software and external MIDI devices to slave to a musician's playing. InTime users can play and record along with pre-recorded MIDI tracks, and those tracks will follow their playing in real time. They can loop a MIDI file, great for practicing with a rhythm track. There are features for customizing InTime's behavior, such as the tempo limiter, which allows users to set a minimum and maximum tempo, so they don't speed up or slow down too much. The Groove Tracking mode lets users play "around" a steady tempo but still play with feel. There is also a suite of advanced tempo tracking controls that lets the users refine InTime to follow their personal style of playing.
