Cinevative Creates Promo for "The Stones"Cinevative's solution was to combine the architecture of the overpasses with the skate ramps (February 24, 2006)
Cinevative was approached by Center Theatre Group to create a stylized, motion graphics based promo that would generate excitement for it's upcoming production of "The Stones"
The play follows a real life event in which two teenaged boys playfully toss stones off a freeway overpass until they hit a passing motorist who is instantly killed.
CTG asked Cinevative to create a piece that would speak to the "skate culture" style of the production. Much of the story takes place on a Los Angeles freeway overpass and incorporates skateboarding on giant half pipe ramps on stage.
Cinevative's solution was to combine the architecture of the overpasses with the skate ramps in a "grunge-collage" style animation. The action begins playfully, with a montage of skateboard tricks surrounded by a stylized 3D Los Angeles. The conflict builds as skaters loose control, fighting erupts and a stone smashes through the screen.
Cinevative director Mark Ciglar shot the production's two actors against a 24' green screen situated behind the ramps. Adobe After Effects was used to composite and animate elements that were created in Adobe Photoshop. 3D elements were rendered in Maxon's Cinema 4D and a film-like appearance was achieved using The Orphanage's Magic Bullet Suite. All post-production was completed at Cinevative's facilities using the new Macintosh G5 Quad and two Macintosh G4's outfitted with Blackmagic's Decklink Pro cards.
"The Stones runs from March 12th through April 9th at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. The promo can be seen at www.taperahmanson.com starting March 1st.
