Canon's Pixma Printers Provide Life-Like Photo Quality

New line of inkjet photo printers first to carry PIXMA brand (July 12, 2004)

Canon's four new inkjet photo printers - PIXMA iP1500, iP2000, iP3000 and iP4000 - offer consumers new levels of price performance for print quality that was, until recently, only available in dedicated six-ink photo printers. Available in stores this August with estimated selling prices ranging from $49.99 - $149.99*, Canon's new PIXMA inkjet printers feature microscopic 2 picoliter ink droplets for virtually grain-free photographs.

"Canon's new PIXMA branded printers demonstrate our commitment to bringing consumers the highest level of photo quality and performance across our entire range of printing solutions," said Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president and general manager of the consumer imaging group at Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. "With high quality photo printing established across the four new models, consumers will enjoy increased speed and productivity-based features as they step up the line."

With equal quality in the four new printers, consumers will find additional features and speeds as they move up the product line. All of the new PIXMA printers feature Canon's exclusive FINE high-performance print heads. FINE technology "Full-Photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering" ensures sub-micron level precision during the manufacturing process. FINE print heads are the only consumer-oriented print heads to achieve an actual 1,200 dpi nozzle pitch (600 dpi for iP2000 and iP1500). FINE print heads allow for high-speed printing over wide areas in a single pass.

Canon PIXMA iP1500 Photo Printer
At an estimated selling price of $49.99*, Canon designed the PIXMA iP1500 photo printer with the college student and other cost-conscious consumers in mind. Significantly faster than Canon's previous entry-level printer, the iP1500 model can print pages up to 18 pages-per-minute (ppm) in black** and up to 13 ppm in color**. With true edge-to-edge borderless printing of 4" x 6", 5" x 7" and 8.5" x 11" photos previously unavailable from its predecessor, pictures look like they came from a photo lab.

Canon PIXMA iP2000 Photo Printer
For an estimated selling price of $79.99*, the PIXMA iP2000 Photo Printer features PictBridge technology for direct photo printing. Consumers can easily print pictures at home or the office, from any PictBridge-enabled digital camera or camcorder***. Users simply connect the digital camera or camcorder to the printer with the USB cable that came with their camera.

The iP2000 Photo Printer bumps the speed up to 20 ppm in black** and up to 14 ppm in color**. This model adds a second front-feeding paper tray that accommodates letter-sized media in addition to the standard auto sheet feeder located on top of the printer, which prints all sizes up to letter sized media. The dual-paper path allows the printer to be loaded with both plain paper and photo paper simultaneously, so both documents and photos can be printed without the need for stopping and changing paper. Users can switch easily between the two sources by simply clicking the paper feed selector located on the front of the printer.

Canon PIXMA iP3000 Photo Printer
At the $99.99* price-point, the PIXMA iP3000 Photo Printer is one of the fastest printers in its class. The printer delivers up to 22 ppm in black** and up to 15 ppm in color**. The iP3000 printer ejects a staggering 19 million droplets of ink per second at the maximum of 4800 x 1200 dpi color resolution#. The iP3000 printer also adds a second independent paper source. In addition to the standard auto sheet feeder, the front-loading paper cassette tray expands the usability by allowing the user to load 4" x 6" and 5" x 7" paper in addition to letter-sized media in either paper source.

The PIXMA iP3000 printer represents Canon's entry-level price point to feature individual ink tanks. The Canon Think Tank System provides economical ink use by incorporating four individual tanks that can be replaced individually as each tank runs out##. Adding to the flexibility, efficiency and high performance, the PIXMA iP3000 Photo Printer also includes a fully functional auto-duplex unit that automatically reroutes the page for properly formatted two-sided printing. Both time-saving and paper-saving, the iP3000 printer is the first consumer printer at this price point to feature automatic duplex printing built-in.

Canon PIXMA iP4000 Photo Printer
Replacing last year's i860 model, Canon's new PIXMA iP4000 photo printer will be available for an estimated selling price of $149.99*. The iP4000 model is Canon's fastest consumer inkjet printer to date with print speeds of up to 25 ppm in black** and up to 17 ppm in color**. In addition to the FINE print head, second paper tray and auto duplexer, the PIXMA iP4000 photo printer features Canon's unique five-color ContrastPLUS ink system.

The ContrastPLUS ink system incorporates a dye-based photo-grade black ink tank for photo printing, delivering improved image contrast and overall sharpness, particularly when used on photo paper. The ContrastPLUS ink system also has a pigment-based black ink tank to achieve crisp, fast, high-quality black text.

Canon includes several software applications### on the Setup Software & User's Guide CD-ROM for each of the four new printers to make a variety of applications easier for the consumer including printing photos and web pages.

An updated version of the very popular Easy-PhotoPrint software (Windows/Mac), allows customers to print photos quickly using simple menu choices to locate digital images, pick paper size and type, choose the layout and print. Other features that help produce realistic digital images in the Easy-PhotoPrint software include Vivid Photo to print life-like vibrant colors and Photo Noise Reduction to decrease noise from digital images. New tools added to this version include Face Sharpening for out-of-focus face correction, Face Brightener to correct for less-than perfect lighting conditions, Red Eye Correction, Blemish Remover to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and skin imperfections in addition to Auto Duplexing support. Easy-WebPrint software~ (Windows only, requires Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5, version 6.0 is recommended) provides consumers with a tool that automatically resizes web pages to fit the standard printer page so they may be printed without losing important information from the right side of the screen. PhotoRecord (Windows only) helps print photo albums and photos with frames.

The PIXMA iP1500, iP2000 and iP3000 printers are compatible with Windows 98/Mellinum Eddition/2000/XP. The inclusion of a parallel port on the iP4000 printer gives additional support for Windows 95 and Windows NT. All four printers are compatible with Macintosh OS 9.x and Mac OS X v 10.2.1 to 10.3.x or later. A one-year limited warranty with InstantExchange is included with an option to purchase an extended limited warranty (good for up to three years) from Canon for $50.00~~. All four printers will be shipping in August to retail outlets across the United States.
