Canon Previews New Digital Still Cameras

Digital ELPH models get 2 megapixel resolution By Dave Nagel
Canon has introduced two new models in its consumer line of Digital ELPH cameras. The new models, the PowerShot S330 and the S200, gain several improvements over their predecessors, including the ability to record 80 frames of video at 640 x 480 at 20 frames per second. The new models will roll out this month and next.

Both cameras offer similar features, though their optical zooms differ. The S330 includes a 3x optical zoom (35-105mm at f/2.7-4.7), while the S200 offers a 2x zoom (35-70mm at f/2.8-4.0). Both cameras feature a 2.0 megapixel CCD sensor, an improved user interface, direct print capability with Canon's new CP-100 and CP-10 Card Photo Printers, movie mode with sound, Photo Effects mode, a shutter speed range of 15 seconds to 1/1,500 seconds, spot metering, selectable ISO settings from 50 to 400, built-in red-eye reduction light-guide flash and zoom playback up to 10x image review.

Recording capabilities include VGA (640 x 480 pixels for four seconds), QVGA (320 x 240 pixels for 10 seconds) and Q2VGA (160 x 120 pixels for 30 seconds) at 20 frames per second. In addition, the PowerShot S330 features a built-in speaker for audio playback, as well as a Voice Memo feature that allows users to add up to 60 seconds of sound annotation to any captured image on the camera's CompactFlash card.

Both cameras come with an 8 MB CompactFlash card and software for macintosh and Windows, including Mac OS X. These include Apple QuickTime 5.0, Canon RemoteCapture 2.4 and PhotoStitch 3.1 for both Macintosh and Windows; Canon ZoomBrowser EX 3.3, PhotoRecord 1.4 and WIA and TWAIN drivers for Windows; and ImageBrowser 2.3 and a Photoshop-compatible plugin for the Mac.

The Canon PowerShot S330 and S200 Digital ELPH cameras will be available March and April for $499 and $449, respectively.
