Canon Lenses are Super for NEP Broadcasting

Super Bowl XL to be Broadcast Exclusively Using Canon HD Lenses (February 03, 2006)

When the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks take the field for Super Bowl XL at Detroits Ford Field on Sunday, February 5th, the eyes of nearly one billion people around the world will be upon them. Thats why mobile production company NEP Broadcasting chose Canon lenses to shoot this years game. NEP will deploy more than 150 television cameras for ABC and other clients, and every one will have a Canon lens on it.

?The Super Bowl is the biggest, most widely viewed sporting event in the country, said George Hoover, senior vice president of engineering at NEP Broadcasting. ?We use Canon because of the quality of the lenses, their reliability, and the service and support afforded to us. Canon is sending two field service engineers to the game just in case theyre needed.

To capture all the excitement and drama, NEP will be using a variety of different Canon lenses, including three models of Canons long field HDTV lenses equipped with Shift-IS internal Optical Shift Image Stabilization for dynamic image creation in live HDTV production. These include the DIGISUPER100xs (XJ100x9.3BIE-D), the DIGISUPER86xs (XJ86x9.3BIE-D), and the DIGISUPER75xs (XJ75x9.3BIE-D). NEP will also be using quantities of two portable HD EFP lens models: the HJ11ex4.7B IRSE wide-angle lens and the HJ21ex7.8B IRSE telephoto zoom lens.

The DIGISUPER100xs is the worlds first triple-digit zoom lens. All three DIGISUPER lenses being used by NEP for Super Bowl XL feature Canons unique second-generation built-in Image Stabilization (or Shift-IS) system, which enables directors to capture dramatic high-impact long shots and deliver them shake-free to the viewing audience. The lenses also feature Canons XS technology for improved optical performance and lighter weight, as well as the companys second-generation Digital Servo System, which provides microcomputer compensation of lens focus breathing (the inadvertent alteration of field of view when operating the focus control) as well as a host of other improved digital operational features for focus and zooming control. Canons DIGISUPER lenses deliver precision HDTV production performance and heightened long-range zoom capabilities, features that have made Canon the standard of excellence in sports production.

?Lenses play a big part in the storytelling aspect of the game coverage, being able to get the shots and the close-up images that production teams are looking for, Hoover said. The extreme reach of the DIGISUPER lenses allows NEP to get intense close-ups from fixed positions far away from the action. For Super Bowl XL, NEP will be using seven DIGISUPER100xs lenses, approximately 20 DIGISUPER86xs lenses, and six DIGISUPER 75xs lenses.

The HJ11ex4.7B is the widest angle of view portable HDTV production lens offered by Canon. It will be used in the field and in the locker rooms. Both the HJ11ex4.7B and the HJ21ex7.8B have added value thanks to Canons eDrive technology. With eDrive, users can easily program such functions as zoom and focus settings into a lens for precise, automated repeatability via an easy-to-use LCD menu, assignable ?soft function buttons, and the rocker switch built into the lens grip. With the fast-moving action of professional football, this time-saving function can be critical.

This is the 15th trip to the Super Bowl for NEP, and they have been bringing Canon lenses with them since 1992. For the past several years, Canon has been the exclusive lens provider of the big game. According to Hoover, ?Whenever it has been an all-NEP show, it has been an all-Canon show. We are the largest owner of Canon broadcast lenses in the world (nearly 1,000), so I would say we think pretty highly of them!

?Its the big game, Hoover says of Super Bowl XL. ?There is no second chance, so you want all your equipment, especially your lenses, to be the best, most reliable out there, with the best support organization.
