Canon Intros New Still Cameras

Canon today announced several new digital imaging devices, including two digital cameras, three printers and three flatbed scanners. The new devices include the PowerShot S230 and G3 digital cameras, the i320 and i550 Bubble Jet printers, the i850 photo printer and the CanonScan LiDE 50, 5000F and 8000F flatbed scanners.

The PowerShot G3 is a "prosumer" camera that offers a 4 megapixel resolution and improved image processing. It features a 35-140mm f/2.0-3.0 lens with 4x optical and 3.6x digital zoom, with new wide-area Flexi-Zone Auto Focus/Auto Exposure and 12 EOS-based shooting modes. It also offers spot metering, zoom playback up to 10x, direct print capability and an increase in shutter speed to 1/2,000 second.

The PowerShot S230 is the first Canon Digital ELPH model with 3 megapixel resolution and 2x optical and 3x digital zoom lens. According to Canon, it offers an improved Movie Mode that allows the user to record up to 3 minutes of video at 15 frames per second with sound.

On the printer front, all of the new Bubble Jet models feature Canon's advanced Microfine Droplet Technology and offer support for Exif Print for digital cameras equipped with Exif 2.2 (including the new PowerShot models announced today). The flagship i850 Photo Printer features a new printhead with 1,600 nozzles that combines 5 picoliter droplets and 2 picoliter droplets. It has a resolution of 4,800 x 1,200 DPI and offers speeds of up to 22 pages per minute in black and 14 PPM. The i550 Color Bubble Jet Printer has a 1,088-nozzle printhead, 4,800 x 1,200 DPI resolution and print speeds of 18 PPM in black and 11 PPM in color. The i320 Color Bubble Jet has a resolution of 2,400 x 1,200 DPI with print speeds of 10 PPM for black and seven PPM for color.

The new scanners include the LiDE 50, 5000F and 8000F. The LiDE 50 offers 1,200 x 2,400 DPI optical resolution, 48-bit input and output color four button design (copy, scan, e-mail, and file to PDF). It uses a USB 2.0 interface. The CanoScan 5000F and CanoScan 8000F are also USB 2.0 devices and offer 2,400 x 4,800 DPI. Both include a film adapter that allows batch scanning of three and twelve 35 mm negative frames at a time. The 5000F and 8000F also feature automatic removal of dust and scratches.

The PowerShot S230 and G3 digital cameras will be available in October for $499 and $899, respectively. The i850 Photo Printer and the i550 Bubble Jet Printer will be available this month for $199 and $149, respectively. The i320 Bubble Jet Printer will be available in November for $79. The LiDE 50, CanoScan 5000F and CanoScan 8000F scanners will be available in November for $149, $199 and $299.00, respectively. For more information, visit
