Canon Announces New Cameras, Printer

PowerShot S40 offers 4 megapixel resolution By Dave Nagel
Canon USA has introduced two digital cameras and a new Bubble Jet Direct printer that supports printing directly from a digital camera. The cameras are the new S40 and S30, which offer 4.0 megapixel and 3.2 megapixel resolutions, respectively. The Bubble Jet Direct S820D supports both of the new cameras through a proprietary cable. It also supports printing from media inserted into its PCMCIA Type II memory slot.

The printer
Canon says the new Bubble Jet is a full-featured photo printer. While connected directly to one of the cameras, it can print 4" x 6" or 8" x 10" photos without being connected to a computer. Optionally, the Type II slot on the printer accepts most popular media supported by digital cameras, including SmartMedia, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, Microdrive and other PCMCIA-compatible media. A CompactFlash adapter is included with the printer.

The S820D printer includes an optional LCD control panel and an optional Canon Image viewer, a TFT 1.5-inch color image viewer that allows users to preview their photos before printing. The LCD panel has multiple functions to select media type, layout, quality, print date, optimize image and required sheets.

When connected to a computer, the printer supports both Macintosh and Windows systems and offers 2,400 x 1,200 DPI resolution with 4 picoliter droplets. The company says that at 1,200 x 1,200 DPI resolution, the printer can output an 8" x 10" photo in about two minutes on plain paper.

The printer sells for $399, with the optional LCD viewer going for $99.

The cameras
The PowerShot S40 and S30 feature a 7.1 mm to 21.3 mm 3X optical zoom lens (equivalent to 35 mm to 105 mm in 35 mm photography), three-point autofocus and 13 shooting modes ranging from fully automatic to fully manual. Other features include compatibility with Type I and Type II CompactFlash cards, a USB interface, Movie Mode, a new feature called My Camera Settings and Direct Printing using Canon's new S820D Bubble Jet printer.

Other features include:

  • ISO range from 50 to 400 on the S40 and up to 800 on the S30.
  • Histogram display.
  • Three distinct metering modes.
  • Continuous shooting in high-speed and "normal" speed. (Actual speed of continuous shooting was not known at press time.)

The cameras come bundled with Macintosh and Windows software, as well as a 16 MB CompactFlash card, batteries, charger, cables, etc. They are expected to be available at the end of this month. The S40 will go for $799, while the S30 will sell for $599. For more information, visit http://www.powershot.com.
