Cancer Support Community Announces Free Support for Patients & Families in Washington, D.C.

  (August 16, 2011)

Washington, DC (PRWEB) August 16, 2011

The Cancer Support Community(CSC) - an international non-profit dedicated to providing support, education and hope to people impacted by cancer recently announced the expansion of free emotional and social support services in the Washington D.C. community. As of July 2011, CSC is pleased to provide direct support services to people impacted by cancer and their families, through face-to-face support groups and educational workshops held in Washington, D.C. and surrounding areas.

As an international organization, CSC is thrilled to now address the needs of people impacted by cancer here in the nations capital. Our goal is to complement support services already available through fellow cancer organizations and to address unique areas of need that are currently unmet, says CSC President & CEO, Kim Thiboldeaux.

CSC and The George Washington University recently began a partnership to co-sponsor support groups and workshops from CSCs acclaimed Frankly Speaking About Cancer (FSAC) educational series. Run by trained and licensed professionals, FSAC workshops provide crucial information for patients and loved ones managing a cancer diagnosis. Co-sponsored support groups and workshops will be available to patients and family caregivers of the Universitys Katzen Cancer Research Center. CSC and the Katzen Cancer Research Center share a similar philosophy that combining state-of-the-art medicine with emotional and social support creates a comprehensive patient experience that sets the stage for both hope and healing.

The Katzen Cancer Research Center addresses not only the treatment of cancer, but also the related psychological, social and emotional issues that accompany a diagnosis, says Leo Schargorodski, the Centers Executive Director. We are excited to join the Cancer Support Community in providing support groups and patient education workshops to the people we serve. Together, we have the ability to address the physical symptoms and side effects, as well as the social and emotional consequences, of cancer and its treatment.

CSC is also pleased to partner with Washington Cancer Institute at Washington Hospital Center to offer additional workshops from the FSAC series. CSCs Frankly Speaking About Cancer workshops have proved to be an effective way to educate our patients and answer their questions reports David J. Perry, M.D., Medical Director of Clinical Research at Washington Cancer Institute. He adds, I participated in a recent workshop on the treatment of colon and rectal cancers and was able to make real connections with patients and family members.

Making direct service available to the Greater Washington, D.C. community is an extension of the support CSC already provides to thousands of people across the country and around the world. Through its Online Community, CSC has offered real-time, professionally-facilitated support groups for more than a decade. CSC also recently unveiled CancerSupportSource, a mobile application for iPhone and iPod Touch, making it possible for users to access emotional and social support resources anytime, anywhere.

Through our toll-free helpline, personalized, one-on-one treatment decision counseling, mobile application and online support groups, CSC has utilized new technologies to make free support available to people affected by cancer for many years says Thiboldeaux. We are so pleased to now expand these offerings to include face-to-face support groups and educational programs for patients, survivors and caregivers in D.C., Northern VA and MD.
