Can foreign tourists help US economy?Tourism industry pushes for US to allow more foreign visitors, move could help economy
LAS VEGAS (AP) ' The U.S. Travel Association is pushing Congress to make it easier for foreigners to visit the United States.
Nearly 7.6 million nonimmigrant visas were issued in 2001, compared to fewer than 6.5 million in 2010. Tourism leaders in the U.S. say the decline symbolizes a diplomacy failure that is costing American businesses $859 billion in untapped revenue.
Business titans such as the National Retail Federation, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts have endorsed the proposed immigration overhaul.
The federal government strengthened travel requirements in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. At least five bills in the Senate and House would make it easier for foreigners to obtain tourist visas.
Lawmakers say national security remains a concern.
