Call to Remember Project Invites People Everywhere to Share and Hear Memories of 9/11

  (September 07, 2011)

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 07, 2011

In preparation for the opening of the 9/11 Memorial, a new project, Call to Remember, is gathering voices from people affected on September 11. Stories and memories will be retained in the museums oral history archive, and some will be shared through the Broadcastr platform.

Call to Remember is a collaboration between the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, HISTORY, and Broadcastr.

We are all witnesses to the tragedies of September 11 those in New York City, in Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, throughout America and around the world. That day is permanently etched in our individual and collective memories. Personal stories from 9/11 make valuable contributions to the way our shared history is shaped and remembered, said Dr. Libby OConnell, Chief Historian, HISTORY.

Anyone can record through the toll free call-in line at 855-We-Remember (855-937-3636). Visitors to the World Trade Center site will also be able to record their voices at interactive kiosks installed at the 9/11 Memorial Visitor Center, which opens to the public on September 12, 2011.

Select stories will be uploaded as MP3 files to Broadcastr, where they are accessible for free on the iPhone and Android apps, as well as on the Web.

Each story on Broadcastr is geo-tagged to a physical location. At the World Trade Center site, visitors can use the mobile app to stream featured stories automatically as they explore. The app plays whatever story is tagged to your physical location, leaving your eyes and hands free to experience the Memorial.

Listening to these voices is a powerful experience, especially while visiting the Memorial and standing in the spot where it happened, said Broadcastr co-founder Andy Hunter. Were helping build a rich, important archive of memory, experience, and history that is easily and widely available.

Broadcastr and the 9/11 Memorial first announced their partnership in January 2011. Since then, edited oral history segments gathered from 9/11 witnesses, first responders, and victims family members by the 9/11 Memorial Museum as part of its official archive have been available on the Broadcastr app and featured on its website.

The new collaboration with HISTORY will expand the Museums collection with crowd-sourced memories from all over the world. The project supports multiple languages.

By collecting these stories, we support our mission to educate, shaping the historical record through memory, Executive Vice President and Director of the 9/11 Memorial Museum Alice Greenwald said. This project is an important opportunity for people across the country and around the world to share their stories not only from the day of 9/11, but also from the aftermath, when we came together to recover and rebuild.

To share your moment of history, call 855-We-Remember (855-937-3636), or visit the interactive kiosks at the 9/11 Memorial Visitor Center at the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan.

About the National September 11 Memorial & Museum:
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is the not-for-profit corporation created to oversee the design, raise the funds, and program and operate the Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center site. The Memorial and Museum will be located on eight of the 16 acres of the site. The Memorial will be dedicated on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and will open to the public the following day. The Museum will open in 2012.

The Memorial will remember and honor the nearly 3,000 people who died in the horrific attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. The design, created by Michael Arad and Peter Walker, consists of two pools formed in the footprints of the original Twin Towers and a plaza of trees.

The Museum will display monumental artifacts linked to the events of 9/11, while presenting intimate stories of loss, compassion, reckoning and recovery that are central to telling the story of the 2001 attacks and the aftermath. It will communicate key messages that embrace both the specificity and the universal implications of the events of 9/11; document the impact of those events on individual lives, as well as on local, national, and international communities; and explore the continuing significance of these events for our global community.

When the Memorial opens, construction will continue on the other World Trade Center projects and free visitor passes will be temporarily required. To plan a visit to the Memorial or learn how to contribute, go to
