Calif. officer gets prison in assaults on women

San Diego police officer gets nearly 9-year term for assaults on women motorists By The Associated Press

SAN DIEGO (AP) ' A judge has sentenced a veteran San Diego police officer to nearly nine years in state prison for sexual battery and other crimes involving female motorists he pulled over.

The case of 41-year-old Anthony Arevalos was among a series of officer misconduct incidents that embarrassed San Diego police and led to department-wide scrutiny in the nation's eighth-largest city.

Judge Jeffrey Fraser said during Friday's hearing that the sentence was meant to not only punish but to act as a deterrent to any other potential violations of public trust by officers.

A jury convicted Arevalos of crimes against five women during an 18-month period in 2009 and 2010.

Many of the victims were intoxicated when they were stopped in downtown San Diego's Gaslamp area, a district with many bars and restaurants.
