Calif. officer critically wounded in shooting, suspect arrested By The Associated Press

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ' Authorities say a Sacramento-area police officer is in critical condition following a traffic-stop shooting, and a suspect is under arrest.

The Sacramento Bee reports ( ) that the officer was hit by several bullets from what police believe was a lone shooter after the officer attempted to pull a vehicle over in the Sacramento area around 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sacramento Police Department spokesman Sgt. Andrew Pettit says 32-year-old suspect Tyron Smith was arrested late Saturday night following an hours-long search

The wounded officer is a member of the Twin Rivers Police Department.

Twin Rivers police spokesman William Cho says the 25-year-old officer was in critical but stable condition after surgery at the UC Davis Medical Center. He says doctors are optimistic he's going to survive.
