Calif. lawyer to be sentenced in baby selling scamProminent Calif. lawyer to be sentenced in baby selling scam spanning 2 continents
SAN DIEGO (AP) ' A prominent San Diego attorney accused of running a baby selling business that spanned two continents will appear before a judge for sentencing.
Theresa Erickson is scheduled to be in federal court Friday. She faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud in what prosecutors say was a scheme in which she and two other women lined up parents for babies they had already created by sending U.S. surrogates to the Ukraine to be implanted with sperm and embryos from anonymous donors.
Prosecutors say the parents believed they were legally adopting the babies.
Under the law, parents and surrogates enter into a contract before the pregnancy.
Carla Chambers, who helped recruit the surrogates, also will be sentenced. She also faces up to five years in prison.
