Calif. lawyer sentenced in baby-selling scamProminent Calif. lawyer sentenced in baby selling scam spanning 2 continents
SAN DIEGO (AP) ' A California lawyer who was a respected reproductive law specialist has been sentenced to five months in prison and nine months of home confinement for her role in what prosecutors say was a baby-selling scheme.
A San Diego federal judge on Friday also ordered 44-year-old Theresa Erickson to pay a $70,000 fine.
Co-defendant Carla Chambers has been sentenced to five months in prison and seven months in home confinement.
Aspiring parents believed they were adopting legally, but prosecutors say Erickson was really working with Chambers and another woman to line up parents for babies that had already been created by sending U.S. surrogates to Ukraine to be implanted with sperm and embryos from anonymous donors.
