Calendar: SMPTE 2002 Cinematography Seminars

Half-day series during 144th SMPTE Conference, Oct. 26 By Dave Nagel
The 144th Conference of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers will be held Oct. 23 to 26 at the Pasadena Conference Center in Pasadena, Calif. During the event, a half-day seminar track will be offered Oct. 26 by the American Society of Cinematographers and the International Cinematographers Guild.

Sessions at the afternoon-long seminar series include:

  • 1 p.m.: Live Internet chat with Bill Butler, recipient of the latest ASC Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • 2 p.m.: Focus on aesthetic decisions and how they affect film and digital media production. Panelists include: Russ Alsobrook, Rodney Charters, Richard Crudo, Tom Del Ruth, Stephen Lighthill and Roy Wagner.
  • 3:30 p.m.: Focus on how the trend toward digital film mastering is extending the role of the cinematographer into postproduction. Panelists include: Thomas Ackerman, Allen Daviau, Roger Deakins, John Hora and Alar Kivilo.
  • 5 p.m.: Open forum: "Truth or Myth?" Questions and answers about how technology influences the art of filmmaking.
