CMP Media's Game Developers Conference Announces Keynote Roster

The Gama Network has announced its preliminary list of keynote speakers for the 16th annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) March 19 - 23, 2002, in San Jose, Calif. The GDC is the world's largest event exclusively devoted to game developers, featuring more than 300 lectures, panels, seminars and interactive sessions across seven content tracks.

Keynote presenters are:

  • General Interest: Shin'ichi Okamoto, CTO and vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment, a company veteran since 1983 and instrumental in the formation of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Okamoto is also credited with the development and launch of the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2.

  • Visual Arts track: Peter Chan, conceptual illustrator, whose recent work includes "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace."

  • Production track: Shuhei Yoshida, vice president of product development, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), who helped orchestrate the creation of the Sony PlayStation. Yoshida now oversees all product development activities for SCEA as well as the 989 Sports brand.

  • Business and Legal track: Gabe Newell, co-founder and managing director, Valve Software, a long-time veteran of Microsoft Windows product releases and producer of the award-winning blockbuster title Half-Life.

  • Game Design track: Kazunori Yamauchi, president, Polyphony Digital, producers of the hit racing title and franchise Gran Turismo.

  • Level Design track: Toshihiro Nagoshi, president, Amusement Vision, a veteran of Sega and AMII, (predecessor to Amusement Vision) whose credits include Virtua Stricker 3 and Daytona USA 2001.

  • Programming track: John H. Conway, distinguished professor of mathematics, Princeton University, the creator of numerous mathematical theories and most widely known for his mathematical games, including The Game of Life. He was the subject of a mathematical novel, "Surreal Numbers" by Donald Knuth.

  • Audio track: Ray Colcord, president, The Society of Composers and Lyricists, a former producer with Columbia and United Artists Records, producer of Aerosmith's second album, Get Your Wings, and touring member with Lou Reed and Don Maclean. His television and film credits include: The Simpsons, Deep Impact, Dinosaur and Big Brother 2.

    "Each year, the GDC Advisory Board assembles speakers at the forefront of creativity and technology -- people who pioneer approaches and set standards in their respective disciplines," Alan Yu, director, Game Developers Conference, said. "This year's keynotes offers the game development community themes, messages and skills to inspire further breakthroughs for designers, producers, artists and programmers."
