CET Universe and BlackBox Creative Group (BLKBX) Host ASC's Single-Chip Camera Evaluation

First Comprehensive Industry Tests with Leading Cinematographers (April 11, 2011)
DMN Newswire--2011-4-11--CET Universe, a leading provider of services, systems, and solutions for professional audio and video production, and BlackBox Creative Group (BLKBX), a digital creative studio, today announced that the companies collaborated on the hosting of the recent American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Single-Chip Camera Evaluation (SCCE). CET and BLKBX provided the editing facility and equipment, including Apple Final Cut Pro, for the recent test, which is the first impartial comprehensive evaluation of the image quality of 11 leading digital motion picture cameras and 35mm film.

Conducted in early March, the SCCE evaluation was hosted at the CET Universe headquarters in Studio City, California over a three-day period. BLKBXs CEO, Frank Donner, and CETs CEO, Steve Klein, worked closely with Josh Siegel, an SCCE participant, to create a high-end, neutral environment for the tests.

The evaluations edited presentation will be presented this evening, from 6:00-8:00 pm, at the NAB 2011 conference in Las Vegas, in the Content Theater at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The test results and resulting footage will be made freely available to the public. The purpose is to provide an unbiased opportunity for cinematographers, directors, and producers to evaluate the image quality of all currently available single-chip cameras.

ASCs Bob Primes coordinated the overall evaluation, which tested cameras and equipment from vendors including Arri, Canon, Clairmont, Fujinon, Nikon, Panasonic Red, S.two, Sony, Vision Research, and Weiscam, among others. In addition to Primes, leading cinematographers and directors of photography participated in the evaluation, including Michael Bravin, Mike Curtis, Bill Hogan, Jack Holm, Stephen Lighthill, and Nancy Schreiber. Mike Curtis acted as post supervisor.

?The professional video industry is rapidly moving to an all-digital universe, and the more detailed, crystallized data that we can deliver to producers, DPs, and editors on the performance of single-chip cameras, the more coherent our conversations become when selecting equipment for feature film and television projects, said Siegel. ?The ASC, as it did in 2009 with its first digital camera tests, has moved another step toward codifying the digital image capture opportunity for professionals, and CET and BLKBX provided an invaluable service in offering a neutral, world-class site for these significant evaluations.

The evaluation considered camera sharpness and resolution; sensitivity and noise; exposure latitude; color gamut; color gradations; flesh tones; compression artifacts, and shutter artifacts. The evaluation considered the performance of 35mm film, and the following cameras: Arri Alexa, Sony F-35, RED MX, Phantom Flex, Weisscam HS2, Sony F-3, Panasonic AF-100, Canon 1D Mk 4, Canon 5D Mk 2, Canon 7D and Nikon D7000.

?We have provided expertise regarding tapeless workflow for several years now, and the SCCE evaluation is as valuable to our team as it is to the industry overall, said. Klein ?This collaboration has manifold benefits for our film customers and our digital workflow customers, and the ASC team should be congratulated for this unprecedented effort.
