CET Universe Provides Test Bed for Warner Bros. Studio Workflow Project

Warner Brothers Next-Generation Production Workflows Report Hosted at CET`s Studio City Headquarters (April 10, 2011)
DMN Newswire--2011-4-10--CET Universe, a leading provider of services, systems, and solutions for professional audio and video production, today announced that it has provided the test bed and host facilities for the recently-released Warner Bros. Next-Generation Production Workflows Report. Conducted from October-December, 2010 during a six-week period, the project was comprised of 20 separate digital workflow tests which included more than 30 vendor participants. CET provided its headquarters facility, in Studio City, California, as the host site for the tests, and helped coordinate the overall testing.

Originally reported at the Hollywood Post Alliance’s annual Tech Retreat in Palm Springs, California in mid-February, the Warner Bros. production workflows report was spearheaded by Sean Cooney, vice president of advanced production technology at Warner Bros. CET’s CEO, Steve Klein, and Frank Donner, CEO of BlackBox Creative Group (BLKBX), coordinated the on-site workflow tests, which ranged from different camera systems and post-production tools to editing and digital dailies. CET’s chief engineer, Tony Cahill, worked closely with technical consultant Jonathan Smiles, Sean Cooney, and Donner to ensure that each test was conducted according to Cooney’s specifications, and that each vendor involved was independently and accurately documented by the Warner Bros. team.

CET’s Constellation, a leading digital asset and storage management system, provided the storage and archive management to LTO tape drives for all of the content created during the Warner Bros. Next-Generation Production Workflow tests.

“We have reached a tipping point in regard to best practices in digital workflow, and the industry now realizes the need for some level of standardization regarding various ingest and editing systems,” said Klein. “The Warner Bros. project is the first in a series of Hollywood post-production tests that will yield a greater level of understanding and codification of how all-digital workflows are designed and implemented.”
The Warner Bros. project confirmed that digital workflow must be implemented in upfront budgets and planning for filmmakers, and that production and post-production facilities are now becoming digital hosting facilities.
“The workflows that we tested encompassed major vendors, and all of them participated openly and eagerly, in a way that was refreshingly creative and revelatory; we pushed the envelope in certain areas, including 3D, and learned a great deal about what worked and what requires further work,” said Cahill. “It was exciting to be part of this effort; we saw the industry rallying around the all-digital production and post-production opportunity in a way that is both necessary and, in some respects, unprecedented.”

Constellation has been used by major facilities and artists, including the likes of Universal Sports, David Fincher, and Northwestern Mutual.

“Creative decisions in the production and post-production world today require greater levels of technical expertise than ever before, and studios are taking on exponentially larger jobs. Working with the Warner Bros. team to test the next phase of post-production was historic for all involved,” said Donner. “We were particularly pleased with the performance of Constellation with all of the tests; this system was built for the kind of complexity that studios are now managing.”
