CBS NEWSPATH Selects BitCentral for Digital News Management and Distribution

World's Largest Satellite Newsgathering System Will Implement BitCentral's Proven MediaPipe News for CBS NEWSPATH NOW (July 23, 2001)
BitCentral Inc today announced CBS NEWSPATH chose its MediaPipe News to deliver 24-hour digital news content to CBS owned and affiliated stations and broadcasters.

By moving to BitCentral's all digital file-based system, CBS NEWSPATH expects to significantly lower costs and increase efficiencies at the network and station level.

BitCentral's MediaPipe News integrates broadcast, IP, and MPEG technologies in a seamless manner to lower operating costs and increase the productivity of news producers through an easy-to-use desktop application.

CBS NEWSPATH is the world's largest satellite newsgathering system, providing a 24-hour news service to more than 200 CBS stations and affiliates. John Frazee, vice president, news services, CBS News, described the decision to partner with BitCentral as "an easy one."

"At CBS we try to maximize opportunities, from pioneering regional news feeds to operating the first completely digital satellite distribution system. We knew there was an opportunity to lower costs by minimizing refeeds, automating processes, and eliminating videotape equipment. The problem was none of this had been done before, and the new system had to cost less than our current one," said Frazee.

"We had a previous relationship with BitCentral and were impressed by their engineering expertise, technology, and ability to deliver on time and under budget. We agreed this new solution would not be easy, given the customization and legacy system integration required. Only BitCentral had the experience to design, implement, and maintain a system specific to our needs," continued Frazee.

BitCentral's browser-based application allows news producers to easily sort through a database of hundreds or thousands of stories organized by categories, view browse or broadcast quality video on demand, track stories, and build rundowns from their desktops.

Digital servers, located at each affiliate station, download news stories through the combined use of a one-way satellite transmission and IP multicast technologies. MediaPipe is designed to seamlessly integrate into existing analog and digital broadcast equipment.

According to Tim Anderson, president, BitCentral, MediaPipe News has advantages over existing market offerings. "Our browser interface allows news producers to access and manage breaking news from any computer connected to an affiliate station's virtual private network. In addition, news producers select their own profile criteria to determine how stories are filtered, sorted, and displayed."

Kevin Knickerbocker, executive vice president of sales, BitCentral, stated market response to MediaPipe News has been positive. "We designed the CBS NEWSPATH NOW solution so it looks like their existing system yet has tremendous added functionality. We created multiple beta products, and held numerous focus groups to get this right. Initial research indicates increased workflow efficiency will result in annual cost savings of approximately $100K per station."

Knickerbocker continued, "When we showcased CBS NEWSPATH NOW at NAB2001, networks and station groups told us our technology, proven track record, and service-based monthly pricing model were compelling. That's our mission: state-of-the-art functionality, high ROI, and low risk."

BitCentral is currently deploying its MediaPipe News servers to all CBS affiliates and is developing follow-on applications. Customers can schedule MediaPipe News demonstrations by contacting the company directly or visiting
