ByteTaxi Releases FolderShare 2.5Secure file sharing and auto synchronization between Macintosh, Windows and Linux computers (July 19, 2005)
ByteTaxi, Inc. today announced the release of FolderShare 2.5, the first file sharing and synchronization service to work with Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux computers. The FolderShare service, specifically designed for individuals and small businesses, allows customers to securely share and automatically synchronize folders between computers and network devices through the Internet, and enables private, remote access to files via a web browser. As a result, people can access and share files easily and securely no matter where they are.
Unlike programs that require customers to manually synchronize files or clunky remote control programs, FolderShare enables people to work as they normally do. When a shared file is created, changed or deleted, FolderShare automatically ensures that each computer and device sharing the file has the latest copy. File synchronization is immediate, transparent, and secure, which means that shared files are always up to date, even on computers that are physically separated by thousands of miles and a dozen time zones.
"Today, people are accumulating large collections of photos, documents and digital files on a variety of devices at home and work," said Sean Burke, executive vice president, consumer solutions and operations at Iomega Corporation, which incorporates FolderShare into many of its consumer storage products. "Computer users want an easy and secure way to access and synchronize these files between their own devices and share them with other people. We are excited to be shipping FolderShare software with our external hard drives and empowering individuals and businesses with an easy and reliable way to access and share their files no matter where they are."
FolderShare 2.5 includes several enhancements over previous versions, to improve the efficiency of sharing and syncing files across multiple computers. Key features of FolderShare 2.5 include:
--Multi-platform support: Allows individuals and businesses to securely share and automatically synchronize files between Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux computers. Linux capability currently includes support for the soon-to-be released Iomega StorCenter Network Hard Drive. Support for computers and servers running Linux will be available in Q4.
--Remote Desktop Search Capabilities: Allows Google Desktop Search users to search for files on all of their computers at the same time and view the results on the same page.
--"File Difference" Support: FolderShare's file difference support benefits users who need to share large files (like video and other multimedia). FolderShare transmits just the changed parts of the file instead of the entire file, sharply reducing the impact on bandwidth and file transfer time.
--Remote Access: Allows users to access all files on their computers remotely and securely from any web browser.
--256-bit Encryption: Ensures file transfers are secure.
--Support for Iomega StorCenter Network Hard Drives: FolderShare 2.5 will ship with and operate on next-generation network hard drives from Iomega.
"Legitimate peer-to-peer technologies like FolderShare will power file sharing between next-generation computers and network devices," said Michael Merhej, CEO of ByteTaxi, Inc. and former president of music sharing innovator, Audiogalaxy Inc. "No matter which way the Supreme Court rules in the upcoming Grokster case, P2P will continue to transform the way people communicate, collaborate and share information."
