Bringing Books to Life and Hitting the Open Road with Showtime and Creative Bubble

(July 31, 2001)
In the creation of two very different title sequences and promos, broadcast design and visual effects specialist Creative Bubble shows some "Snow in August" and "Going to California" for Showtime Network.

The two opens, one designed for a Showtime original movie, the other for a new series, vary drastically in tone and feel but were, in fact, "designed specifically to fit each program's sprit and to bring that sprit to life," explained Creative Bubble designer Doug Dimon. "The goal for (Showtime art director) Damian Mager was to condense the feel of the program into a small sequence. In dealing with two very different programs the approaches were, of course, different."

The "Snow in August" promo features a young boy walking through a snowy landscape and through an iron gate. The tone is dark, gothic, and dreamlike, with a subtle texture of a still image that's somehow moving. "The film deals with a young boy in the '40s who is in love with comics and comic book imagery," explained Mager. "We decided to make his world much like that of a comic book."

"The producers had selected the clip for the titles," said Dimon. "We took ut and shaped it, desaturating the color, adding textures, and slowing the speed to create a languid, floating atmosphere. It was pretty challenging since the shot was set and we had to dig in to get what we wanted."

"Going to California" is considerably lighter in tone. It features a car speeding down a wide open highway, with superimposed road signs and titles flying by. "It's for a series about two friends taking a cross country road trip," said Mager. " We wanted it to be bright and straightforward as a reflection of that."

As for the contrast between the pieces, the designer and art director have contrasting opinions. "'Going to California' was a bit more fun because it was more of my own," said Mager. "I storyboarded, shot, and cut it. So it was rather fulfilling to watch it all come together."

Dimon is partial to "Snow in August, stating, "It's what I do. Taking, shaping, and forming. Making it come to life. That's the fun part of my job, to have something at the end of the day that wasn't there at the beginning"
